NYPD breaks record with 10,000 officers for Knicks parade

The New York Knicks first ever ticker tape parade rolls through Manhattan’s Canyon of Heroes.

New York City is pulling out all the stops for the New York Knicks. The NYPD announced it will deploy 10,000 officers to Thursday’s victory parade in Manhattan the largest police presence ever assigned to a planned event in the department’s history.

The decision to mobilize such an extraordinary force reflects the electric but at times turbulent atmosphere that surrounded the Knicks’ run to the NBA championship over the San Antonio Spurs. In the hours after the team clinched the title on Saturday, police arrested 63 people and at least 10 NYPD officers were injured during street celebrations across the city.

A parade route steeped in history

Thursday’s celebration will begin at 10 a.m. near Bowling Green, a park in Manhattan’s Financial District, before heading north along Broadway to City Hall. The route famously known as the Canyon of Heroes has served as the backdrop for some of New York City’s most iconic ticker-tape parades throughout history.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani is scheduled to present the Knicks with keys to the city at City Hall, capping off what promises to be a landmark moment for a franchise and fan base that has waited more than five decades for this kind of celebration. The Knicks previous championships came in 1970 and 1973, and neither title was honored with New York’s signature ticker tape treatment. Thursday’s parade marks a true first for the organization.

Legends, performers and a city ready to celebrate

The event is expected to draw some of the biggest names associated with the franchise and the city itself. Knicks legends Walt Clyde Frazier, a member of both 1970s championship teams, and Patrick Ewing are expected to take part in the parade, according to a source. MSG Network’s longtime play by play voice Mike Breen is set to serve as emcee for the City Hall ceremony.

Adding to the star power, singer Alicia Keys has been tapped to perform. Keys, who collaborated with Jay-Z on the 2009 anthem Empire State of Mind, confirmed her involvement in a social media post Wednesday, expressing that participating was an easy decision given her connection to the city and the moment.

Unprecedented security measures in place

To ensure the safety of what is expected to be a massive crowd, the NYPD‘s deployment will include heavy weapons teams, explosive detection K9 units, and personnel from transportation, transit, highway and aviation divisions, along with drone operations.

The scale of the security effort is a direct response to the chaotic scenes that played out in the days leading up to and following the championship clincher. While the vast majority of fans celebrated peacefully, authorities have been clear that they intend to maintain order throughout Thursday’s festivities.

A city’s long wait finally over

For New Yorkers who have followed the Knicks through decades of heartbreak and near misses, Thursday represents something much larger than a parade. The franchise’s last championship was more than 50 years ago, and the emotional weight of this moment has been felt across all five boroughs since the final buzzer sounded.

With Knicks stars, city legends and one of New York’s most beloved performers all converging on Broadway, the Canyon of Heroes is set to live up to its name once again.

After years of heartbreak, rebuilding seasons and near misses, the franchise has finally returned to the pinnacle of basketball. Now, millions of New Yorkers are expected to line the Canyon of Heroes and celebrate a championship that many believed they might never see.

And with the largest security operation in the city’s history standing watch, officials are hoping the focus remains exactly where fans want it to be. On the team that brought the NBA title back to New York.
