Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan, while speaking to Elle UK Magazine, revealed that she was once confronted by a drunk Bridgerton fan while she was in a bathroom. The actress revealed that the drunk fan began to discuss her body in front of her,
“I remember this really drunk girl once talking to me in a bathroom being like, ‘I loved (Bridgerton) because of your body. And she started talking about my body, and I was like, ‘I want to die. I hate this so much…'”
The actress expressed displeasure with the audience focusing on her body, instead of her work,
“It’s really hard when you work on something for months and months of your life, you don’t see your family, you really dedicate yourself and then it comes down to what you look like – it’s so fuc**ng boring.”
Nicola Coughlan claims that she has no desire to become the face of body positivity
The 39-year old Irish actress, who plays Penelope in the Netflix period drama, mentioned that she doesn’t want to become the face of body positivity,
“The thing I say sometimes that pi**es people off is I have no interest in body positivity. When I was a kid growing up, I never thought about that. I didn’t look at actors and think about their bodies. So, I actually don’t care. There’s a lot of things I’m passionate about, it’s not one of them…That’s someone else’s thing. It’s not mine.”
The actress who first gained attention for her role in Derry Girls revealed that clothing labels have incorrect sizing labels. The actress revealed that she was exercising a lot while appearing in Bridgerton, and had lost a “bunch of weight”, which made her size 10. The actress expressed displeasure at being called “plus size” and questioned the audience for thinking that she’s the “biggest woman” they’d want to see on screen.
This is not the first time the actress has shared her opinion on discussions about her body. In January 2022, Nicola Coughlan addressed scrutiny of her body on Instagram and urged fans to refrain from talking to her about it. Coughlan asked fans not to “share” their opinions about her body with her.
