Chihards assemble! NBC has revealed the fate of its OneChicago franchise. As part of the network’s drama series renewals, NBC has greenlit new seasons of Chicago Fire, Chicago Med and Chicago P.D., confirming that all three procedurals will return in Fall 2026 as part of the One Chicago Wednesdays.
The news of the OneChicago franchise renewal doesn’t come as a surprise, given the franchise’s popularity. However, Chihards were eagerly awaiting the network to reveal the fate of this beloved franchise.
The Chicago franchise, created by Derek Haas, Michael Brandt & Dick Wolf and produced by Wolf Entertainment, contains four procedurals in total: Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago P.D. and Chicago Justice, with the firefighter procedural laying the foundation in 2012 and serving as backdoor Pilots for Med and P.D. NBC canceled Justice, the latest installment in the franchise which aired in 2017, after just one season due to sustainability and space for other programms. However, all three shows maintain strong ratings and lead primetime in total viewers, appearing in Peacock’s Top 10 list each season.
More on this in our story.
The OneChicago franchise renewed for Fall 2026
While the network has always shown immense faith and confidence in its OneChicago franchise, the past season renewals came with budget cuts and multiple main cast exits from all three shows. Additionally, the network reduced the series order from 22 to 21 episodes, with fewer episodes per main cast member. NBC has yet to reveal the episode count for the upcoming seasons but the early renewal hints that Chicago Fire, Chicago Med and Chicago PD will likely bag a full series order.
This news confirms that NBC has renewed Chicago Fire for Season 15, Chicago Med for Season 14 and Chicago P.D. for Season 12. The OneChicago franchise will return with its new seasons on NBC in Fall 2026, likely on its staple time slot on Wednesday nights.
According to a recent report by Deadline, Dick Wolf’s franchise will have to secure veteran cast members for the upcoming seasons, namely Chicago Med lead S. Epatha Merkerson. Since Merkerson’s Sharon Goodwin has been a staple on Med since its premiere (in 2015), the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actress is certain to return for another season.
As the OneChicago franchise continues to roll out impressive numbers for NBC, its recently released (March 4) crossover event was a hit and boosted the ongoing seasons in total viewers, with social video views up by 75% (compared to the 2025 crossover). The latest crossover saw the first responders from all three shows coming together for an aerial emergency and solving a chemical attack conspiracy.
Now that NBC has revealed the fate of the OneChicago franchise, fans are wondering about the future of Wolf Entertainment’s Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order, which have yet to receive season renewals. In addition to these three beloved drama procedurals, NBC has also greenlit two comedies, St. Denis Medical and Happy’s Place, for new seasons.
Chicago Fire, Chicago Med and Chicago P.D. air weekly episodes (for their ongoing seasons) on NBC every Wednesday. You can also stream the episodes on Peacock, a day later.
