Molly and Cody’s frank talk puts a new spin on soap opera sex

General Hospital has been taking a bit of heat of late for giving couple off-screen sex rather than love in the afternoon, Carly and Valentin’s steamy love scene in March not withstanding. On the April 21st episode, GH took a different and very real approach to sex with Molly and Cody.

Molly (Kristen Vaganos) was so ready to resume her life that one of the first thing she asked Dr. Navarro after getting a clean bill of pelvic health was whether she could have sex again. However, when it came time to actually have sex, Cody (Josh Kelly) backed away, making Molly wonder if he had lost his attraction to her.

That’s when Cody had to be honest. He absolutely wanted to be with Molly. He just didn’t want to hurt her and wondered if it had hurt when they’d had sex in the past. Cody had been reading up on endometriosis and learned that sex could be uncomfortable or downright painful for some women.

That’s when Molly had to be honest with Cody. It was something that was hard to hear, but not when Molly explained further.

Let’s talk about sex

Cody listened as Molly told him that it was never painful with him, but that didn’t mean it was perfect. However, to Molly sex wasn’t just about the physical act. It’s about the emotion and connection that came with it. She loved being with Cody even if there was a little physical discomfort. That discomfort just paled in comparison to her emotions when she was with him.

General Hospital then presented us with a tender love scene that was just right as Molly and Cody had sex for the first time since her sugery that removed endometrial tissue.

Their talk was something new for soaps, as intercourse and troubles that can surround it are never really mentioned. Maybe characters will talk about pregnancy, birth control, and even STIs, but we have never heard painful or uncomfortable intercourse discussed before a popular couple makes love.

That was a very realistic change of pace for a show that has been hit or miss with love scenes or the lack therof in recent months. It was nice to see the talk come from a couple nobody would have imagined a year ago.
