Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson would love to reunite with this co-star from the show

Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson has got a clear answer when it comes to which costar from the show he would want to reunite with on Broadway, and it’s none other than his on-screen husband Eric Stonestreet.

The two played spouses Cameron and Mitchell for eleven seasons, and Ferguson has now told PEOPLE that if he had to pick one of his former costars to star alongside him onstage, it’s Stonestreet, without a doubt. Speaking to the outlet he stated,

“We have been pitched ideas before. It just never has felt right.”

Though he’s quick to add he’d “relish the opportunity” to work with pretty much any of them, including Sarah Hyland, Ty Burrell, as he continued,

“I mean, Sarah Hyland’s a beast on stage and I would love to be with her on stage too. Ty Burrell, I used to see on stage when he was starting off in his career. So yeah, I mean any of them really, but of course I’m going to say Eric.”

Ferguson previously mentioned on his Dinner’s On Me podcast that there was actually a spinoff idea for Modern Family in development about Cameron and Mitchell during the Covid-19 pandemic. But when it started looking like it might actually happen, Ferguson realized he wasn’t interested. He wanted to pursue other projects, specifically a play in New York. Speaking about which he states,

“I was interested, but I was also supposed to do this play in New York. It sort of felt like, as the reality of, maybe the spinoff was actually going to happen, I literally felt like, ‘Oh my god, I want to date other people.’ “

Well here’s hoping that we do indeed find a way to see Mitch and Cam together on the screen again.

More details about Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet on Modern Family

Mitchell Pritchett and Cameron Tucker were the perfect example of opposites attracting, and that’s what made them work so well together on Modern Family.

Mitchell, the uptight lawyer played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson, is defined by logic and restraint. He’s reserved, practical, and thinks through situations before making decisions, which is completely opposite of the whimsical Cam.

The dreamer played by Eric Stonestreet, Cameron comes from a farm in Missouri and was a former music teacher, clown, and eventually a PE teacher and coach. Cameron is big, theatrical, sensitive, and has no problem expressing his emotions. He is expressive, loving and super dramatic.

The genius of their dynamic was how they balanced each other. Cameron offsets Mitchell’s deadpan with outlandish campiness. Mitchell keeps Cameron’s dreams grounded in reality. One quote from the show perfectly captured it:

“You see, the dreamers need the realist to keep them from soaring too close to the sun, and the realist? Well, without the dreamers they might not ever get off the ground.”
