Large fire breaks out at Medline Industries facility in Tracy

Emergency crews responded This afternoon to a massive fire at a Medline Industries warehouse facility in Tracy, California, sending a towering wall of black smoke into the sky and prompting the evacuation of the building and surrounding warehouses in the area.

The fire was burning in the 5700 block of Promontory Parkway, approximately eight miles west of Tracy’s city center, in an industrial area home to several large distribution warehouses including facilities operated by Amazon and FedEx. Tracy is located about 30 miles southwest of Stockton in the northern San Joaquin Valley.

What is known about the fire

Aerial footage captured by news helicopters showed a large, dense plume of black smoke rising from the site, with trailers and other vehicles also on fire at the scene. Promontory Parkway was closed in the area of Hansen Road as fire crews worked to contain the blaze.

The Tracy Fire Department confirmed it was receiving mutual aid from other agencies in the response. The Tracy Police Department said officers were assisting with evacuations and directing traffic in the surrounding area. The San Joaquin County Office of Emergency Services confirmed there were no formal evacuation orders issued for the wider community, though the immediate structure and neighboring warehouses were evacuated.

Medline Industries describes itself as the largest provider of medical and surgical products, serving healthcare facilities across multiple points of care with supply chain solutions. CBS News Bay Area reached out to Medline Industries for comment but had not received a response as of the time of reporting.

The scene as it developed

The fire was still active as of early Thursday afternoon. Multiple agencies were on scene working to bring the blaze under control. Parkway closures and evacuation assistance were ongoing, and the situation was described as developing. No injuries were immediately reported, though crews were still actively working the scene.

The location of the fire in a densely packed warehouse district raised concerns about the potential for the fire to spread to adjacent structures. The area is a major logistics hub for the region and any extended disruption could affect distribution and supply chains operating out of the corridor.

This is a developing story.
