Marshals cast talk about “intense endings” for their characters; tease if they’ll survive Season 1 finale

It looks like CBS’ Marshals, the Luke Grimes-led Yellowstone spin-off, is keeping one tradition alive in Taylor Sheridan’s universe. The flagship series, which wrapped its series finale in December 2024, after a successful five-season run, was known to feature unexpected deaths and intense conclusions to narratives. Be it John Dutton’s tragic murder or Jamie Dutton’s satisfying end, Yellowstone never shied away from featuring gut-wrenching deaths and the spin-off series is determined to continue that tradition.

The freshman season of the Yellowstone spin-off follows Kayce Dutton as he joins the U.S. Marshals as a part of an elite team to bring range justice to Montana, combining the familiar elements of a Western and a cop drama as Kayce uses his skills as a talented Navy SEAL and cowboy. In addition to Grimes and his son Tate (Brecken Merrill), the spin-off has also introduced many new characters, namely Deputy U.S. Marshal Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel) and Deputy U.S. Marshal Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos).

In a recent interview with Collider, the Marshals cast reflected on their characters’ journey, hinting that nobody is safe in the finale. When asked what fans would think after the explosive Season 1 ending, Santos said:

“I must know what happens next!” There are a lot of cliffhangers. For each of our characters, there are very intense endings to Season 1 that are very intriguing, and I think for all of our characters, we go through really great journeys. Our starting point to where we end up by the end of the season is really beautiful.”

The Marshals cast tease an explosive Season 1 finale

As the Marshals cast hinted, no one is truly safe in the Yellowstone universe. The spin-off series premiered with the shocking death of Monica Dutton, Kayce’s wife and a central character in Yellowstone. As Kayce struggled with the grief of his wife’s recent passing, he found a new purpose in the elite team and he quickly rose to the occasion.

With only three episodes (out of thirteen) in, the spin-off series was quick to establish its high-stakes and intense world that will not spare anyone, be it Santos’ Andrea or Kebbel’s Skinner. Reflecting on their characters’ fates in the Season 1 finale, while Grimes and Miller joked that their respective characters are ‘safe’, the rest of the cast was quick to point out that their characters will be caught up in elaborate plots and danger:

”No one else is safe. Well, Tate might be. Tate’s the safest. Everyone’s protecting him. This is the asset right here.”

Naturally, Marshals is keeping the next Dutton generation safe and sound but the Season 1 finale spells danger for practically everyone else. The recently released entry titled ‘Road to Nowhere‘ saw Kayce Dutton caught in the middle of a dangerous feud. While the Dutton siblings sold the titular family ranch to Thomas Rainwater in the Yellowstone series’ finale, the spin-off has found a way to entangle the youngest Dutton in a bid to protect it. As Rainwater and his Broken Rock Reservation community fought to protect their land from the Montana locals demanding economic development, Kayce Dutton was tasked to pick a side, which would naturally have major consequences for his elite team in the upcoming episodes.

Unpacking Marshals’ change of tone (from Yellowstone), Grimes added:

”…The show has to stand on its own two feet. You have to know right off the bat that this is different. It’s a different pace. It’s a different format. Honor the original show, but also, right away, bring people into what it is now. This is an action show. This isn’t a melodrama. It moves a lot faster, and we hope that the original fans like it. We just hope that anyone likes it so we can keep doing it again.”

Marshals airs weekly episodes on CBS every Sunday.
