The post was shared alongside a message from Shirilla herself, urging people to keep spreading the phrase “Free Mackenzie Shirilla.” The reaction to that has been messy and brutally divided.
Most of these supporters are people who watched The Crash on Netflix and have deep dived into the case thorougly. Some mentioned that the documentary convinced them that the incident was just an accident and not an intentional act, while others commented on how the legal system may have come to a conclusion too quickly.

The supporters keep returning to the same question: why would she do this and risk dying herself? and it’s the part they can’t get past. Some have pointed to her reported POTS diagnosis, a condition that can cause fainting, and asked whether anyone seriously considered she may have lost consciousness before impact. Others raised the possibility of her shoe catching the gas pedal.
One commenter even floated the idea that someone else in the car may have interfered with the gearshift in the final seconds. And then there were the people who showed up with their own stories, someone who hit the gas instead of the brake while impaired and plowed into another car at a red light, someone whose heel slipped and caused a rear-end collision.

People calling the support movement disrespectful aren’t mincing words about it. They’re saying two teenagers are dead, their families are living with that forever, and the comment section cheering for her release is rubbing salt into something that will never fully heal.
One comment got passed around more than most. It referenced text messages reportedly entered into evidence during the trial, messages where Dominic Russo had tried repeatedly to end the relationship, and where Mackenzie’s behavior in response had raised serious concerns.
There are two completely coherent stories someone could walk away with depending on what they’ve read, what they’ve watched, and what they already believed walking in.
