M1 grinds to halt due to huge lorry fire with drivers warned of hour delay and six miles of congestion

A FIERCE lorry fire has broken out on the M1, with two lanes closed causing severe disruption.

The M1 southbound has ground to a halt due to the lane closures on the between Northampton and Milton Keynes.

Three out of four of the lanes are closed on that section of the motorway, with images showing a lorry engulfed in flames at the side of the road.

Emergency services are en-route to scene.

All lanes were initially shut, though one has now been re-opened.

This caused major disruption on the road, as emergency services responded to the lorry fire.

An hour ago, National Highways East said fire fighters “are still working to extinguish the vehicle, and additional water is now being sent to the scene”.

It later updated: “Traffic has now been released in lane 4 on the #M1 southbound between J15 (#Northampton) and J14 (#MiltonKeynes).

“All other lanes remain closed at this time whilst the fire service continue to work at the scene.”

It warned drivers of an hour delay and six miles of congestion approaching the site of the fire.

Drivers were thanked for their “continued patience” and have been urged to “consider alternative routes”.
