Luke Grimes teases decade-long future as Kayce Dutton in Marshals

Luke Grimes is clearly loving playing the character of Kayce Dutton in Marshals. Speaking of how long he plans to play the character of Kayce Dutton, Luke Grimes told Radio Times in an exclusive interview:

“I mean, I’ve signed a contract, so I have to do it as long as people kind of watch it for the next, however, many years. But if there was ever a character that I was going to play for 10 years or more, this is the one.”

Luke Grimes has made it clear that the character isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. However, the actor didn’t reveal exactly how long his contract runs.

Grimes first appeared as Kayce Dutton in Yellowstone, which ran for five seasons. After the series ended two years ago, the actor returned to the same role in its spin-off, Marshals, continuing the character’s story in a new setting. His ongoing series, Marshals, has already been renewed for Season 2.

Luke Grimes’ character’s journey in Marshals has been something of a rollercoaster. The series reveals his wife, Monica, dying from cancer. And his grief ends up complicating his relationship with his son, who wants him to acknowledge his feelings. While at times viewers see him trying to move forward and let go of her memories, he keeps circling back to them time and again, showing that the loss continues to affect him.

Even after the mission where they rescued the girls in the Marshals, he decides to let go of his past. Additionally, he goes on dates with Dolly Weaver, showing that he’s trying to open himself up again. In Marshals Episode 9, he and Andrea are seen stargazing, hinting that there could be something more in the cards for them.

As for his teammates, Kayce shares a strong bond with Cal and the rest of the team. When Andrea is kidnapped by Randall Clegg, he throws himself into the mission to save her, feeling responsible and still carrying guilt from his past with Clegg.

During the interview with Radio Times, Luke Grimes also opened up on the reason he decided to play the character in the Yellowstone franchise, adding:

“When I read the script in 2017 for the first time, I remember thinking, if I don’t get to play this guy it’s going to be the one that got away. It’ll be the biggest heartbreak of my career. I’ll think about this for the rest of my life. So the fact that I got it was a dream come true. It’s very easy for me not to take it for granted, because I do love playing this guy.”

He added:

“Obviously there are times when I think about it all at once, and I think, ‘Oh, my God, how many more years? And this is crazy, and this is a lot of work.’ But then I remember this is Kayce, so I’m good. I get to be in this beautiful place in the mountains, and it’s just awesome. It’s all the things I wanted to play as a young actor and as a boy, all rolled into one.”

Marshals Season 1 finale is scheduled to air on CBS on May 24. While the series has been renewed for a second season, a confirmed release date is yet to be announced.
