Lore drops, horror twists, and Nikaido’s final words

Dorohedoro Season 2 Episode 5 has been released, and fans are going to feel a whole range of emotions with this instalment. It is undoubtedly one of the most lore heavy narrative this season has offered so far. We got some emotional backstories, horrors beyond imagination, and a cliffhanger that would make fans lose patience waiting for the next episode to air.

Turns out that Dorohedoro Season 2 Episode 5 starts with taking a closer look at Doctor Kusakabe’s past. With that, it becomes clear that his role in this story is more important than anyone could have anticipated. We are introduced to Ai Coleman, who is a human from the Hole and desperately wants to become a sorcerer.

This kind of transformation is near impossible. That is when Kasukabe enters the scene, and as he is invested in his research on sorcerers’ corpses, he becomes the key element to Ai’s wish. As a tragic incident leaves Ai critically injured, he pleads with the doctor to just experiment on him.

Interestingly, in Dorohedoro Season 2 Episode 5, the experiment actually is successful, and Ai actually becomes a sorcerer, although he disappears immediately after. All of the events that happened just reframe on how we look at Kasukabe’s character now. He is no longer just a researcher but maybe the central figure who is connected to the origin of the series biggest mysteries.

Ebisu’s homecoming turns into horror

In the second half of Dorohedoro Season 2 Episode 5, the focus is on Ebisu. After she managed to regain parts of her memory, she made the decision to return to her family home. Although she did not go alone, Fujita somehow reluctantly accompanied her.

One thing we need to know about this show is that if we get a lighter moment, viewers need to get mentally prepared, as the story will spiral into something far more disturbing. And that is exactly what happened, Ebisu’s mansion was empty and her parents where no where to be found.

Instead, she sees someone who claims to be her, and for some unknown reason also looks like Ebisu. After this point, the episode follows one of the most grotesque sequences. Turns out her parents had hired a sorcerer to restore their daughter. It resulted in the creation of this duplicate. Once again, we are reminded how unpredictable and disturbing the world of Dorohedoro is.

Caiman and Nikaido deliver a devastating ending

Just when viewers might feel like Dorohedoro Season 2 Episode 5 might take a calmer approach to storytelling, it takes yet another drastic turn. As the spotlight returns to Caiman and Nikaido. The duo is having a normal interaction, and the moment is light; fans might get comfortable watching them as this kind of dynamic is missed.

That is when Nikaido says that this is the last time she will ever speak to Caiman. No one saw this coming, and unfortunately, Nikaido also offered no immediate explanations. This feels too sudden, and the tone has been completely shifted.

For now, there is no clarity whether she is separating or is about to betray. Maybe it could even be something darker, although we will have to wait for the next one to see where this conversation goes.

Final thoughts on Dorohedoro Season 2 Episode 5

In conclusion, Dorohedoro Season 2 Episode 5 manages to perfectly deliver a story in a way that the tension has been creeping up slowly. We got to watch multiple elements like lore drops, emotional stakes getting higher, while this franchise continues to maintain its signature dark humor in an extremely brutal world.

Fans are going to like the overall animation because MAPPA Studio has refined mixing CGI with 2D. This week’s episode is proof that Dorohedoro is a one-of-a-kind series that should be at least watched once. The story is clearly building onto something that might have a massive payoff. It is recommended to stick around because, as fans, we would not want to miss what comes next.
