Legendary UK department chain announces closure of ANOTHER store as shoppers mourn ‘end of an era’

YET another branch of staple British high street department store is closing its doors.

The store is shutting its shop in Plymouth in March 2026.

The city centre’s House of Fraser (HOF) department store is to close after signs appeared in its window saying it will shut next year.

This store is one of only 12 House of Fraser stores left in the UK after the Bristol branch shut its doors last year.

This closure is another big blow to the company, Frasers Group Plc, which owns the store as HOF is down from 59 stores in 2018.

Fraser group Plc also owns Sports Direct and Flannels, among other brands.

Plymouth locals flocked to social media to express their sadness over the high street closure and predict what could replace it.

One user said: “I feel very sad this iconic store is closing so sorry for the lovely staff at the loss wish you all well for the future.”

“It would make a great venue and eating/drinking destination. But something with a bit of imagination, not a ruddy Spoons again” said another.

The Sun has approached the Fraser Group for comment.

A Facebook user expressed their concerns about the death of the high street saying: “Another decent store closing, first Debenhams now house of Fraser! Is the Next next one ? Then Marks & Spencer’s?”

The Plymouth House of Fraser store was actually due to close in 2018 but was spared when billionaire retail tycoon Mike Ashley bought the chain out of administration.

This comes week after bargain store Poundland revealed it will have more than 100 shops in the UK by early next year in a major blow to the British high street.
