Karl Urban has been pretty vocal about what’s coming for Butcher in The Boys season 5, and he’s opening up again on what we can expect from his character this season, particularly as he enters new territory. From what he has now said, the V-powered organism arc from season 4 is going to matter a lot this season, and it’s going to mess Butcher up in ways we haven’t really seen before.
Speaking to Discussing Film, the actor stated
“What I really enjoy about season five in particular is the fact that we really get, I get to explore a duality of the character at the end of season four, Butcher gives himself over to this sort of V-powered sort of organism that’s within him.”
He then continued on about how in The Boys season 5 we see a different side of him, where there is a switch he can flip that turns him into this cold, calculated version of himself, but then when he’s not in that mode, it’s an internal struggle where he’s desperately trying to hold onto whatever humanity he’s got left. Urban added,
“In season five, we really get to see, you know, a dual character in the regards that when Butcher flips that switch, he becomes very cold, very Terminator-like, and then when he’s not that character, it’s this sort of wonderful struggle in a way for Butcher to retain what little is left of his humanity. So, you know, to discover fresh ground in the final season was such a joy.”
From the sound of it, Butcher is going to have one of the most interesting arcs in The Boys Season 5.
More details about The Boys Season 5
The Boys is ending as season 5 is the final season which means the stakes are high and almost everyone is in danger. The season premiered on April 8, 2026 with the first two episodes, and new episodes will be dropping weekly until May 20., when the finale will drop.
The season picks up about a year after Homelander consolidated power, and it’s pretty much as bad as it sounds. Homelander is basically running the country now, Annie is leading a resistance, the Boys are scattered, and Butcher is back with a virus that can wipe out all the Supes. The first episode already killed off A-Train, so, nobody’s safe. It would be interesting to see how everyone else’s arcs play out, especially with the anxiety fans have about who’s going to be axed next.
The Boys Season 5 is streaming on Prime Video.
