Last night, I hit up the rolling out magazine release and listening party for Jussie Smollett — yes, that Jussie Smollett we all loved watching on the hit show Empire! It’s easy to forget he’s also a singer, but he reminded everyone of that real quick at the rolling out studio as he debuted his new album, Break Out.
One of the biggest moments of the night? When they unveiled Smollett on the cover of rolling out the crowd went wild.
He sat down with Gary with the Tea and opened up about the inspiration behind the album: finding peace, having uninterrupted time to create, and just being himself again. He also spoke honestly about his journey after the scandal and the overturning of his conviction. He’s clearly in a better space now — grounded, focused, and supported by someone who truly loves him.
The music is smooth, chill, and classic Smollett — those vocals have always been stellar. You can feel the effort and intention he poured into this project, and it shows. Since the album’s release, he shared that it’s already doing well both overseas and here in the States.
Between the music, the mingling, the signature cocktails, great bites, and all the good vibes, it was a night to remember. So good catching up with him. Big congrats to Smollett on the new album and the magazine cover.
