Julie’s history lesson did not hit the spot

Welcome to Days of our Lives Daily Y.A.P.P. (Your After-Program Ponderings) for a quick — and by that, I mean you’re already halfway done — recap of the most amazing or what-the-heck-did-we-just-watch moments on today’s episode. Let’s get to it:

There are few things on soaps as annoying as useless and pointless expository dialogue, but boy, did we get a whole lot of it on the December 18th episode of Days of our Lives when Julie explained Abe’s family history to Liam. We almost felt bad for Susan Seaforth Hayes for having to recite these lines and for Hank Northrop, who was forced to react in shock to stories about people he never even knew. It was almost as if these scenes were for any new viewers who had no idea how Theo was a DiMera. And they probably were for new viewers, but they made old viewers’ eyes glaze over. The dialogue was both silly and unnatural and just didn’t seem to fit. If DAYS really wanted to explain away Theo’s family lineage, the show could have added natural dialogue to the conversation Theo and Chad were having in the crypt. New audience members could have learned about Theo’s mother just by Theo talking about her to Chad. We did learn a few things, but everything that Julie said to Liam could have been said better in a naturally flowing conversation rather than a heavy-handed attempt at a history lesson with two characters who had almost nothing to do with the DiMera kidnappings. Sure, new viewers have now been informed, if they didn’t fall asleep as Julie explained.
