Chinese filmmaker Yi Zhou accuses Marvel actor of sending explicit images and threatening deportation after confronting alleged misconduct
Marvel actor Jeremy Renner is confronting serious new allegations of misconduct from Chinese filmmaker Yi Zhou, who claims the 54-year-old threatened to call immigration authorities after she confronted him about inappropriate behavior. The accusations emerged through a series of Instagram posts that Zhou published, detailing what she describes as a pattern of troubling conduct during their professional collaboration.
Zhou, 37, worked with Renner on two film projects this year including a documentary and an animated movie. She alleges that their professional relationship began when the actor initiated contact through direct messages and WhatsApp with unsolicited explicit images in June 2025. The filmmaker claims these unwanted advances led to a romantic relationship that she now characterizes as manipulative and abusive.
Filmmaker details alleged threatening behavior
According to Zhou’s account provided to media outlets, the situation escalated during a business meeting at Renner’s Nevada home in August. She describes a frightening incident where the actor allegedly became increasingly aggressive after consuming alcohol while discussing logistics for their documentary project Chronicles of Disney.
Zhou claims she felt compelled to lock herself in a room for safety after Renner became what she described as violently angry for approximately two hours. Text messages she shared with colleagues during the alleged incident show her expressing fear and seeking advice about remaining safe in the situation.
The filmmaker provided screenshots of communications with coworkers where she described feeling worried about her safety and confirming she had secured herself in a locked room. Her colleagues reportedly advised her to stay barricaded while the alleged outburst continued.
Immigration threats surface after confrontation
Zhou alleges that when she privately confronted Renner about his behavior and demanded respectful treatment as both a woman and filmmaker, he responded by threatening to contact Immigration and Customs Enforcement. She describes this threat as deeply shocking and frightening, particularly given her status as a foreign national working in the American entertainment industry.
The filmmaker shared what she claims are WhatsApp conversations between herself and Renner, though she declined to provide complete text exchanges to media outlets. In the partial messages she did share, Zhou appears to reference Renner’s alleged pattern of sending explicit images through various platforms.
The alleged immigration threat represents a particularly serious accusation, as such actions could potentially jeopardize Zhou’s legal status and ability to continue working in the United States. Immigration-related intimidation has increasingly been recognized as a form of coercive control used against foreign nationals.
Professional relationship turns problematic
Zhou maintains that Renner pursued her romantically rather than the reverse, contradicting any suggestion that she initiated inappropriate contact. She claims the actor used their professional relationship for personal gain before ultimately denying their romantic involvement and failing to promote their collaborative film projects.
The filmmaker characterizes her experience as representative of broader systemic problems in Hollywood, particularly regarding the treatment of women and Asian filmmakers. She positions her allegations within the context of ongoing industry discussions about power imbalances and misconduct in entertainment.
Fans had previously speculated about a possible romantic relationship between Zhou and Renner after she posted social media content showing them together near his Nevada residence. These public appearances now take on different significance given Zhou’s subsequent allegations about the nature of their relationship.
Renner’s history of controversial allegations
These new accusations add to previous controversies surrounding the Hawkeye actor’s personal life. During a contentious 2019 custody battle with ex-wife Sonni Pacheco, Renner faced allegations of dangerous drug use and threats of violence. Court documents from that period contained claims that he had threatened to kill both Pacheco and himself.
Pacheco, a model and actress who was married to Renner for only 10 months in 2014, made these allegations while seeking custody of their daughter. The couple eventually reached a joint custody arrangement, and Renner has consistently denied the accusations made during those proceedings.
The actor’s representatives have not responded to requests for comment regarding Zhou’s current allegations. Renner himself has not made any public statements addressing the specific claims about threatening behavior or inappropriate communications.
The timing of these allegations comes as Renner continues his recovery from a near-fatal snowplow accident in 2023 that left him hospitalized with extensive injuries including chest trauma and nearly 40 broken bones.
