Jason Wilcox oversees Man Utd training on Michael Carrick’s first day following tactics row that saw Amorim sacked

MANCHESTER UNITED director of football Jason Wilcox observed Michael Carrick’s first training session on Wednesday.

Wilcox usually takes a pitchside view of United training sessions but the club opted to draw attention to his presence following their coaching change.

The former Southampton DoF has come under fire after the sacking of Ruben Amorim last week.

Wilcox questioned the head coach’s tactics and suggested he did not have the same pedigree of other specific managers.

That led to Amorim’s outburst after the 1-1 draw with Leeds earlier this month, which resulted in his departure 17 hours later.

Amorim was incensed to discover that Wilcox likened his role to a manager.

The 40-year-old demanded to be known as the ‘manager’ rather than the ‘head coach’ when he unloaded at Elland Road.

Carrick was announced as the new United interim head coach on Tuesday.

Upon his arrival at Carrington, he said: “Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honour.

“I know what it takes to succeed here; my focus is now on helping the players to reach the standards that we expect at this incredible club, which we know that this group is more than capable of producing.

“I have worked with a number of the players already and have obviously continued to watch the team closely in recent years, I have total belief in their talents, dedication and ability to be successful here.

“There is still a lot to fight for this season, we are ready to pull everyone together and give the fans the performances that their loyal support deserves.”

Carrick previously spent 12 years with Man Utd as a player and made 464 appearances.

During that time he won five Premier League titles, the Champions League and four domestic cups.
