Daemons of the Shadow Realm Episode 12 closes out the first cour with some of the most unsettling revelations the series has delivered so far. Titled “Retainer and Shaman,” its tone shifts from one of confusion to fear because new abilities of daemons are revealed, old hidden agendas come to light, and once again, Higashi Village is on the precipice of ruin. All three storylines converged for the last time, and none have safe conclusions.
This episode stands out for four key moments that define the episode: Ivan’s spatial daemon power and its horrifying application, the unexpected revelation of the tanuki daemon’s trapping method, Asuma’s increasingly murky allegiance, and the looming second attack on Higashi Village. Here is a breakdown of what made each moment count.
The Tanuki Daemon’s Peculiar Trapping Method

Daemons of the Shadow Realm Episode 12 introduces Makoto’s daemon duo with heavy doses of dark comedy. The fox daemon uses its form as bait while the tanuki daemon does something completely different by using the expandable part of its anatomy (the expanded portion of the scrotum) as a net to catch target(s) by stretching it wide enough to ensnare them completely. “Eight tatami mats” now has a different meaning given this, and Asa shows much relief that the fox daemon had seen her first.
The show treats the ability as something that is unsettling rather than purely for comedic value, and is able to succeed because the show has created enough internal logic around daemon powers that allow for something so absurd to still feel consistent. Other amazing moments in Daemons of The Shadow Realm Episode 12 are very hard to forget.
Ivan’s Space-Cutting Ability in Daemons of The Shadow Realm Episode 12
In Daemons of the Shadow Realm episode 12, Ivan Yosano’s power of spatial manipulation is fully revealed with his use of katana/daemon combos to effectively remove, relocate, and visually hide pieces of space. The west gate of the Kagemori compound was not technically “destroyed” during the earlier incident but was cut off, then repositioned, just as if the removed sections were never there. This level of spatial manipulation fundamentally alters everything viewers of the series have been led to believe regarding daemon powers.
In addition to the above, Ivan’s later use of his power to effectively hide within the shaman’s body through a demonstrated spatial cut for an extended period of time before revealing himself to the shaman at the perfect moment really imposes the horror of his power without the use of gore; as the audience is watching Ivan demonstrate how he can use a spatial cut to share a body at will.
Asuma’s Allegiance Grows Harder to Read

Asuma, the most layered thread of Daemons of the Shadow Realm Episode 12, has a meeting with Shingo, his uncle who is linked to the attack on the Kagemori manor through Ivan. While Asuma does not demonstrate a deep commitment toward Shingo’s plans, he does share information with Jin, observes Yuru, and refuses to pursue the minor. His dislike for Shingo has grown sharper with comments made about his mother.
None of this is definite proof of motive. Asuma may be working for the Kagemoris because he is a double agent; or he may have his own agenda unrelated to any major faction. Whatever Asuma’s next move may be, it will have a large impact on a fight without clear allies.
Higashi Village Faces a Second Wave of Violence

Daemons of the Shadow Realm episode 12 concludes the series with the town of Higashi suffering from the aftermath of its first Kagemori assault. The adults allude to their long history of attempted “Yuru” dispatches as justifications for choosing which “warriors” to send, yet they still found themselves on the losing end of the conflict against the Kagemori. Thus, the viewer cannot sympathize with them despite everything Old Chase has done for them.
Additionally, the episode and the season end with the same sense of urgency to complete the next chapter of the story, as the children of Higashi, including baby Azami whose mother has just died at the hands of the Kagemori and specifically their leader Dai, now have to shoulder more of this violence to overcome the hurt they will continue to live through as a result of Kagemori’s actions.
