Is The Forsytes based on a true story? Here’s what we know

Channel 5’s late-Victorian era drama, The Forsytes, wrapped up with its season finale this Sunday on PBS Masterpiece. The Forsytes is a period drama that centres on the titular stockbrokers’ family, led by their matriarch Ann.

Set in and around the 1880s, the series follows how they navigate their lives amidst chaos, familial expectations, social boundaries, career, and more. Jolyon Sr. wants his son Jo to take over, while James wants his son Soames to be the chairman instead. Jo has given up his artistic aspirations for his family and gets married to Frances, a wealthy and ambitious widow who has a daughter, June.

When Jo’s former partner, Louisa, arrives with twins, Jo’s world turns upside down after he learns a shocking truth. Elsewhere, June falls in love with a radicalist architect, Philip Bossiney, and Soames with Irene, a woman who dreams of pursuing ballet in Paris. The plot raises one pivotal question: Is The Forsytes based on a true story?

The Forsytes on PBS Masterpiece is not based on a true story, and it does not bear any resemblance to real-life events. It is adapted from John Galsworthy’s 1922 classic novel series, The Forsyte Saga.

Here’s more on it.

Is The Forsytes based on a true story?

Channel 5’s hit period drama, The Forsytes, is not based on real-life events. It is adapted from a classic novel series that delves into the lives of the wealthy Forsytes in the late Victorian era. It is reimagined by Debbie Horsfield for Channel 5, from John Glasworthy’s hit 1922 novel series bearing the same title. Even though the show is a fiction, it is an exciting watch for history buffs and others, too. Here’s why.

The series is set in the late Victorian period, and the Industrial Revolution had already made Britain one of the wealthiest nations. The steel, iron, coal, and cotton industries were booming, and so were the stockbroker’s firms in London.

Set in this backdrop, the series follows the lives of a wealthy and successful stockbroker’s family from London. Even though it is a fiction, the setting remains rooted in history. Such stockbrokers were able to earn commissions from the investments that their clients undertook.

While still being accepted to London’s elite social circle was tough for the new money class, they networked their way into it through marriages and other connections. Apart from the backdrop, the costumes, dialogues, and set designs transport the viewers to that time period.

Will there be The Forsytes Season 2?

The season wrapped up with its season finale this Sunday on PBS Masterpiece. The season ends with some shocking revelations and a cliffhanger. This brings us to the question: Will there be The Forsytes Season 2? Yes, there will be The Forsytes Season 2.

With Jo choosing Louisa over his family and business, and Soames prioritising power at the expense of his wife Irene’s dreams, the future will not be smooth sailing. Will Irene give up her dreams for Soames and her vow to commit herself to her new life? Will Soames take over the family firm? Will Jo and Louisa finally find peace with each other?

Even though there is no official release date for the series available yet, it might drop around late 2026-early 2027. The teaser shows some glimpses of the upcoming season. It gives us a sneak peek into Jo and Louisa rebuilding their life from scratch, Soames aiming for the chairman position, Irene’s sacrifice, while Frances is trying to rebuild her broken heart.
