Apple TV’s Imperfect Women brings the iconic novel to life and if you’re wondering how much it’s rooted in realism, then the answer is: pretty much. Showrunner Annie Weisman opens up on how faithful the show is to it’s source material. Speaking to ScreenRant, she talked about how Araminta Hall, the author was a major part of the adaptation and that she gave the team significant freedom to create the show for the screen.
Speaking to the outlet she stated,
“We were lucky enough that Araminta Hall gave us a tremendous amount of freedom. She said, “Use it as a jumping off point.” And she really gave it over to us, which was exciting.”
Although the show takes some liberties in it’s translation of these perspectives, the major one is it’s use of visual storytelling to differentiate all the characters’ stories. Talking about this, she adds,
“But we were all drawn to this book because of its focus on female friendship, and these three central female characters, each of whom get an opportunity in the story to tell the story from their perspective. So that multi-perspective structure was something we really wanted to hold onto. It’s what makes it special. It’s how the story unfolds.”
Weisman further spoke about how it was an opportunity and a challenge to turn it into a visual element on the show as she stated,
So really, the challenge and opportunity was to turn that narrative device into something cinematic and visual. So we were able to do that with our collaborators, directors, kind of really create — and with our actors — create a unique look, pace, feel, sound, color palette, for each point of view. And that was the most fun thing to do: to take something that’s really essential to the book and realize it, rather than change it.
