Beef Season 2: The showrunner shared about the origin of the story
Emmy-winning creator Lee Sung Jin, who also worked as the showrunner and executive producer of Beef, shared how the story of the second season originated. He said:
“A real-life incident smacked me in the face.”
He continued:
“I overheard a heated debate in my neighborhood coming from a couple’s home. That idea of juxtaposing younger love versus older love felt really interesting to me.”
Beef Season 2: The story about the generational gap
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the showrunner of the series pointed out how his family and friends reacted in very different ways. This shows a clear gap between generations. He explained:
“When the real-life incident happened where I overheard that altercation in the neighborhood, when I was retelling that story to people […] younger peers were like, ‘Oh my God, did you call the police? Is everything okay?’ Whereas my age and older peers were kind of like, ‘I mean, who amongst us hasn’t [been there]?”

Moreover, he spent ten hours in an emergency room with his wife and wrote down real conversations that later became part of an episode.
Finally, he noticed a sharp difference between wealthy older members and the young workers who served them while staying at a friend’s house near the Montecito Club. These experiences became the foundation of the second season.
