Inside Jennie Garth’s addiction struggles as she details near overdose at the end of marriage

A Time To Dance actress Jennie Garth, who had a rough time dealing with addiction, has released a memoir in which she opened up about her struggles as an alcoholic and an addict, as per Entertainment Weekly.

The 54-year-old Jennie Garth, who is currently married to actor-turned-producer Dave Abrams, in her book I Choose Me: Chasing Joy, Finding Purpose, and Embracing Reinvention, released on April 14, 2026, discussed in detail how she almost overdosed more than ten years ago.

Jennie Garth, who rose to mainstream fame after playing Kelly Taylor in Darren Star’s sitcom Beverly Hills, 90210, revealed in her brand new memoir how she drank bottles of alcohol from the minibar and swallowed multiple anxiety pills at once. She wrote:

“I started to remember the little bottles of liquor from the mini bar, how easy it was to drink one adorable bottle in two swigs before moving on to the next. I remembered the anxiety pills that my doctor had given me and how I thought swallowing a few of those would help take the edge off my desperate, broken heart.”

In her book, Jennie Garth also shared how her best friend, Liz, came to her rescue when she confessed to her that she was having “dark thoughts.” At the time, Jennie was in Phoenix and was staying at a hotel. She wrote:

“When she came to my room, I didn’t answer,” Garth writes. “She pounded on the door, called me relentlessly, until finally she had to ask the hotel for help. They opened the door, and Liz saw me unconscious on the floor. She called 911 and I was rushed in an ambulance to the hospital, where I had to get my stomach pumped. I was out of the woods. At least physically.”

Jennie Garth, who was married to actor Peter Facinelli from 2001 to 2012, shared how her marriage with him ended in front of their therapist in Arizona. While Jennie thought that they were visiting the therapist to save their marriage, she later found out that wasn’t the case. Garth wrote in her memoir:

The therapist “looked at me gently but without hesitation, and asked, ‘Jennie, why do you want to be with someone who doesn’t love you?’ It was a statement that I will never unhear. The question stopped me cold.”

Jennie, then wrote:

“It became clear to me why we were here. It wasn’t to work on our relationship. He wasn’t giving it one last try with the help of a new therapist. He had come here to end our marriage once and for all, in the presence of a third party. I hadn’t fully understood what he had been saying for the last few months. I had been clinging to hope, or disbelief, or denial. But now, in no uncertain terms, it was over.”
