Daemons of the Shadow Realm Episode 13 brings fresh heartbreak to Higashi Village. This episode starts immediately after the horrible attack on Ivan and illustrates the devastation experienced by people who have lived through such a horrifying incident, including orphaned children, a burned-out building, and a shaman’s terrible death in the first few minutes of the episode.
What happens in this episode of the story? Daemons of the Shadow Realm Episode 13 answers that by following two separate threads. One follows Azami, a traumatized girl taken in by Ivan, while the other tracks Danji as he’s swept into a chaotic journey with Oshira toward the modern world.
Higashi Village Suffers Another Tragedy

The episode extends on the grim aftermath of Ivan’s assault. Bodies are strewn across the village, and a shaman lies dead with strange markings carved into his skin. Hana describes the carvings as words, though they resemble something closer to a full passage.
This scene shows just how unfortunate Higashi Village has become; the adult population of the village has been almost wiped out since almost all of them are related to the twins, meaning there is a very large number of young children now orphaned. This pattern creates one of the most intense emotional scenes of Daemons of the Shadow Realm Episode 13.
Ivan Takes Azami Under His Wing

Ivan goes to the village and brings Azami and Fake Asa with him. She watched her mother get beheaded and is the most traumatized survivor of the massacre, so it is extremely unsettling for Ivan to have her as a prisoner in addition to his other prisoners.
The motives behind Ivan’s actions can be questioned based on the fact that Azami is going to be a hostage and is dealing with grief and an uncertain future. This subplot creates a more intense and personal element to Daemons of the Shadow Realm Episode 13.
Danji’s Wild Ride in Daemons of the Shadow Realm Episode 13

In the meantime, Danji is thrust into a new level of chaos when an elderly daemon-user named Oshira picks him up and whisks him away on a high-speed magical horse ride into the modern age. There is an unexpected level of energy created for the episode due to the two scenes’ contrasting environments (i.e., from a rural tragedy to a high-speed chase). Danji is running on a modern road, so, since daemons are invisible to most people, Danji must appear to those watching him as a very odd sight.
This part of the episode has a lighter beat and gives people (and Danji) some breathing space from the earlier destruction caused by Yuru. It also appears to suggest that Danji’s arc will mirror Yuru’s journey.
Fake Asa’s Hidden Attachment to Yuru
The episode continues to add layers to the mystery of Fake Asa, and we see that she has kept a small ball from Yuru for years. After so long of lying to him, her feelings toward him appear to be more real than what her actions have suggested.
Not following Granny Yaga’s orders implies that she has an inner struggle regarding her feelings. Long-time fans of the source material may already be able to guess at her true background, including possible ties to a missing twin. The mystery surrounding her character allows for plenty of development in Daemons of the Shadow Realm Episode 13. The episode sets up many additional things to be explored in the second half of this two-cour season.
