The new Hagrid in Harry Potter: What did Nick Frost reveal?

Frost recently shared about his intentions to honor Coltrane’s original performance in Harry Potter while introducing his unique character in the upcoming TV show. He informed The Times that he can develop a deeper backstory because the television format offers 8 hours per show compared to a short 2-hour movie. According to him, his version of Hagrid is quite friendly.

Frost also mentioned that some people won’t like his performance as Harry Potter’s Rubeus in the upcoming series. He further added that he also drew inspiration from his uncle, Emy, who contracted scarlet fever in the 1950s as a child.

Apart from them, another inspiration for Hagrid was Michael Clarke Duncan’s John Coffey from The Green Mile. Frost stated in The Times interview that he took inspiration from the character due to Coffey being “huge, violent but childlike”.

He also said that he felt terrified during the audition for the role. However, the showrunners immediately loved his unique acting approach. They believed his fresh approach brought a necessary warmth to the giant wizard.

Who is John Coffey?

Coffey is a major character in Stephen King’s multiverse as well as the deuteragonist of The Green Mile. He was a large and powerful inmate at Cold Mountain Penitentiary who was wrongly sentenced to death. People believed he had kidnapped, abused, and killed two young girls, but the real criminal was William Wharton.

One of Coffey’s dialogues with Paul became famous among the viewers. The dialogue goes like this:

“I’m tired, boss……..Tired of being ……..lonely as a sparrow in the rain. I’m tired of never having me a buddy to be with, to tell me where we’s going to, coming from, or why.”

Coffey never wanted to hurt anyone but possessed a supernatural healing ability that cured illness and even brought people back to life.

The actor who played Coffey won the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Supporting Actor.
