Harry Potter is effectively taking care of a major issue that Stranger Things was never able to solve

The new Harry Potter series from HBO is progressing quite quickly, and the network has already commenced the development of the second season of the show, even though the first season has not aired yet. This information came directly from Casey Bloys himself, who shared it with The Times of London while sharing the work being done for the series. The main element of this update that makes it major is the fact that HBO is trying to eliminate the lengthy periods between seasons, as it happened with Stranger Things, where fans loved the show so much, but they were waiting for many years to see it again.

The goal is not to have just one season of Harry Potter one per year, due to the show being so large and expensive. Yet, they hope to shorten the gap between the two seasons, specifically because the kids on the cast are growing up. This becomes a common issue for the fantasy franchises where the cast is comprised of younger actors (children) in the leading role. HBO is well aware of the same and is seeking to address the matter very early.

This new Harry Potter television show will feature all seven of the J.K. Rowling novels in a completely faithful retelling. Each season will feature one complete book. HBO has released the first season one trailer of this new series. This trailer includes scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, which include scenes of Harry receiving his acceptance letter to Hogwarts for the first time, meeting Ron on the train, and receiving his first broomstick. The trailer briefly shows many of the main characters, including Dumbledore, Snape, Draco, and the Sorting Hat.

HBO has also confirmed its main cast. Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry Potter, Alastair Stout plays Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton plays Hermione Granger. The cast also includes well-known actors such as John Lithgow as Dumbledore and Paapa Essiedu as Snape. The series was filmed at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the same studio where the original films were made.

How Harry Potter will deal with the timing problem that Stranger Things failed to address

One of the main problems that Stranger Things dealt with was how long it took to make each season. As the kids were young when Stranger Things started, their ages appeared very noticeable in the show due to the long breaks. Many fans would crack jokes about how all of the cast played characters that were of the same age, yet each time the show returned, several years had gone by, and they looked very much older. All of these long gaps also negatively affected the continuity of the story.

HBO has clearly set its mind to this task and is looking to avoid it at all costs. Taking the approach of developing Season 2 of Harry Potter while still developing Season 1 is a way for the cast to not age out of their character ages. Another reason it is so important for the cast not to age out of character age is that the Harry Potter books have been designed to be told one school year at a time, and should any of the cast outgrow their character age, it could create issues with the storyline and potentially have viewers feel disconnected by seeing such a large age difference.

Bloys said the show was too large and extensive to ensure a new season each year, but preparing now would help limit the time between seasons compared to what other similar shows have experienced in the past. Their main goal is to maintain the ages of the young cast members relative to the ages of their characters.

A look at what to expect from the new series

The new Harry Potter series has a strong team behind it. Francesca Gardiner will serve as showrunner; she has worked on numerous other major drama series. Mark Mylod, who directed the series Succession, is also the primary director for this series. Executive producers include J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, as well as David Heyman, who produced all 8 films in the Harry Potter series.

Season One will feature the complete story of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, where Harry enters the wizarding world. Since each season will cover one of the Harry Potter books, there are lots of elements from the original books that the TV series can explore that the movies had to omit. That includes smaller scenes and character moments and greater detail about Hogwarts and the surrounding wizarding world in general. A lot of fans who grew up reading the books are looking for a more complete version of the story, and HBO is looking to deliver that.

Fans are still waiting for the show, yet HBO is clearly moving quickly. The network may be able to fix the age gap problem that has been an issue for other long-running shows like Stranger Things by planning well in advance. The studio’s main priority currently is to ensure the storyline flows well, the cast stays the same, and that fans are able to remain at a steady rhythm without experiencing long breaks between seasons. It is such a simple concept; however, it could ultimately make a significant impact.
