The original five are back for a third installment, exclusively on Netflix.
More than a decade after the last film, Grown Ups 3 is officially in development at Netflix. The project reunites the full original cast and marks another chapter in Adam Sandler’s unusually productive relationship with the streaming platform, one that has made him one of its most reliable draws since the mid-2010s.
What we know about the Grown Ups 3 cast
According to Variety, all five original cast members are returning. Sandler will be joined by Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade, and Rob Schneider, the same group that anchored the first two films. Their dynamic has always been the core of the franchise, less about sharp writing than about a looseness between performers who have known each other for decades. That familiarity translated well on screen before, and it is presumably why the project is moving forward now rather than with a different ensemble.
Sandler’s role behind the camera
Sandler is co-writing the script alongside Tim Herlihy, his longtime collaborator. Kyle Newacheck is set to direct. Newacheck is not a stranger to Sandler’s Netflix world. He directed Happy Gilmore 2 and Murder Mystery, two of the platform’s more commercially successful comedy titles. His involvement suggests Netflix is treating this as a genuine production rather than a low-effort catalog filler.
The franchise’s commercial track record
The first Grown Ups, released in 2010, grossed approximately $271 million worldwide. Grown Ups 2 followed in 2013 and brought in around $247 million globally. Both were directed by Dennis Dugan and distributed by Sony’s Columbia Pictures. Neither film was a critical favorite, but both performed well enough to establish the franchise as a reliable audience draw. That box office history is part of why the third installment makes sense as a Netflix title. Sandler’s name alone pulls numbers on the platform, and a sequel with built-in nostalgia gives it an even stronger starting position.
Sandler’s Netflix relationship
Sandler first signed with Netflix in 2014, a deal that was renewed in 2017 and expanded again in 2020 to cover four additional films. The partnership has produced a steady output of comedies and, more recently, some of his more dramatic work. Netflix’s leadership has repeatedly pointed to Sandler as one of the platform’s most-watched figures, with his films drawing large audiences across multiple markets. Grown Ups 3 fits neatly into that arrangement, giving Netflix a recognizable title with an established fan base and a cast that audiences already associate with a particular kind of comfort comedy.
What Grown Ups 3 might look like
No plot details have been released. The previous films followed a group of childhood friends reuniting for summer vacations, leaning into physical comedy, generational humor, and a loose, improvisational energy. Whether the third film picks up the same thread or places the characters in a different setting is not yet known. Given that the original audience has aged roughly 15 years since the first film, there is some room to play with where these characters are now, though the franchise has never been particularly interested in dramatic stakes.
Production details and a release timeline have not been confirmed. For now, the announcement is the story.
