Gio and Emma and their whole new Broadway world

General Hospital gave us a trip back in time via a magic carpet ride this week as Gio Palmieri and Emma Scorpio-Drake went on an adventure that reminded us of soaps of yesteryear.

Those of us who grew up on soaps in the 1980s 90s remember those happy summer adventures our favorite young hero and heroine would take to far off lands or just big American cities. Since half the soaps on the air had were taped in New York City, it wasn’t hard to go outside the studio and step into the Big Apple. All My Children and Ryan’s Hope did it all the time.

Even Days of our Lives made its way from California to NYC so Bo (Peter Reckell) and Hope (Kristian Alfonso) could spend some times there. A few years later, General Hospital brought cast members to Brooklyn for Ned (Wally Kurth) and Lois’ (Rena Sofer) wedding, and Ned and Lois now have a 20-something grandson named Gio (Giovanni Mazza) who brought Emma (Braedyn Bruner) to New York for a little Broadway adventure.

While Emma and Gio took in the sights and sounds of Times Square before making it backstage on Broadway, all we could think of were those young couples from so long ago that took our breath away. Emma and Gio remind us of them, location shoot or not and here is why.

General Hospital classic love

Remember those romances from years gone by with a slow burn that turns into genuine love. That is Emma and Gio. They are not shades-of-grey characters who might do something unsavory, while constantly making us guess. They are the real deal hero and heroine. Gio is your all-around good guy and Emma is the progeny of super spies.

Well, her parents are doctors and her grandparents are super spies, but you get the picture. Emma and Gio just have it and soaps need more of it. And while some fans weren’t happy with the “product placement” during this adventure, it made perfect sense for the story.

Gio is a musical hero from New York City, a professional violinist who performed in a Broadway pit. And well, ABC-Disney owns Aladdin and General Hospital, so why not get our young hero and heroine into a Broadway theater to put on quite a show?
