General Hospital alum Sarah Joy Brown marks 30 years since Carly’s explosive debut

General Hospital‘s Carly, the role originated by Sarah Joy Brown, blew into Port Charles 30 years ago. Carly came in like a hurricane, disrupting every life she touched. Now, Brown is taking a look back at her tenure as Carly, the role that won the sensational actress three Daytime Emmys.

General Hospital remembers Carly’s explosive arrival

“Thirty years ago—just after April Fool’s Day—a firecracker named Carly exploded onto the scene in Port Charles… for better or worse,” Brown wrote on Instagram. She continued, reflecting on the audience that quickly became enthralled by her performances, calling them “an incredible, multigenerational audience” that watched, judged, and cheered in equal measure.

The video attached leaned into that early intensity, showing Carly at a bedside, breaking as she said, “When your heart stopped, my heart stopped,” before pushing through tears to insist, “You’re a survivor.” The clip then shifted to a younger Carly sparring with Jason (Steve Burton), holding her ground even as she admitted, “Maybe you don’t care what people think… but I do.”

The response from castmates was immediate and warm. Maurice Benard (Sonny) kept it simple with “Wow,” and Brown replied, “You were just an amazing mentor for me.” Kimberly McCullough (Robin) added, “You’ve always been an incredible actor,” prompting Brown to look back at their early days together and the “giants” they worked alongside. Brown’s Carly on General Hospital is still remembered

Some fans didn’t hesitate to crown her version as the definitive Carly. @alexpinto6157 wrote, “Carly was only unforgettable and a legendary soap character because of this perfectly layered portrayal by SJB. Full stop.” @marisajmitchell added, “You are an incomparable legend,” while @3degreesofharmony recalled watching “from day one when you got off that bus.”

What stood out in Brown’s reflection wasn’t just nostalgia. It was how clearly she understood what Carly became. She called it “a true honor to originate a character” that would shape daytime television, and that sense of ownership still reads on screen.

Fans picked up on that immediately. @coffeeandplannedchaos wrote, “My favorite Carly,” while @iammikey___ said, “I started watching GH because of you.”

Thirty years later, the character still evolves, but the blueprint hasn’t changed. Brown didn’t just arrive and play Carly. She defined the edges of who Carly could be, and somehow, all this time later, those edges still hold.
