The rapper’s latest legal move signals the co-parenting battle is far from over
Rapper Future is no longer playing defense. The Atlanta-born artist has taken an aggressive step in his ongoing legal dispute with ex-girlfriend Brittni Mealy, filing a motion that asks a judge to hold her in contempt of court. According to documents obtained by TMZ, the filing stems from accusations that Mealy violated existing court orders, with much of the motion kept under seal. The timing aligns directly with Future’s earlier accusations that she had been leaking information about him to members of the press.
The two have been locked in a contentious legal battle for some time, and this latest development makes clear that neither side is ready to let things cool down. Future is not simply asking the court to reprimand Mealy. He is pushing for both civil and criminal contempt findings and is demanding that she cover his attorney fees as a result of the alleged violations.
The insurance dispute that started it all
The backdrop to this contempt motion stretches back to an earlier court order requiring Future to secure a $500,000 life insurance policy for the benefit of their 13-year-old son, Prince. Mealy was designated as the trustee under that arrangement. She previously filed legal action claiming Future had not fulfilled that obligation, and her attorneys pushed for him to be jailed until he could demonstrate compliance.
Future denied those claims. His legal team also sent correspondence to Mealy suggesting they believed she was the source behind media coverage of the lawsuit. Mealy denied leaking anything.
That back-and-forth set the foundation for the current contempt motion, which represents Future’s attempt to shift the legal pressure back onto his ex.
Eva Marcille’s partner is representing Brittni
One detail that adds a layer of celebrity intrigue to the case is who is sitting at Mealy’s legal table. She is being represented by Michael Sterling, the partner of Real Housewives of Atlanta star Eva Marcille. Sterling is a prominent Atlanta attorney, and his involvement keeps this case squarely in the public eye regardless of how the parties try to keep proceedings private.
The redacted portions of Future’s filing have not been made public, but sources familiar with the matter suggest the motion directly references the alleged leak activity that Future’s team flagged earlier in the dispute.
A pattern of public conflict between the two
This legal saga has been building for years. A 2023 court ruling increased Future’s child support obligation for Prince from $3,000 to $5,000 per month. Mealy has also publicly claimed that Future went more than 16 months without seeing their son, an allegation that sparked significant reaction online and put additional pressure on the rapper’s public image.
Future has not issued a public response to the most recent filing, which is consistent with how he has handled much of this dispute. He has largely let his legal team speak through the courts while avoiding direct commentary outside of denying the specific claims against him.
The case touches on familiar pain points in high-profile co-parenting situations, child support obligations, access to the child, alleged media manipulation, and competing legal strategies designed to apply maximum pressure on the other side.
Future has at least seven children. Among the most well-known is his son with singer Ciara, whose relationship with Future and subsequent marriage to NFL quarterback Russell Wilson became one of the more widely covered celebrity narratives of the past decade.
With Michael Sterling in Mealy’s corner and Future’s legal team pushing for contempt sanctions, this case is not settling quietly. Both sides appear prepared to let a judge decide what accountability looks like.
