Twenty-nine years after “The One with the Morning After” episode came out, Friends star Lisa Kudrow is finally offering her take on the high-strung breakup between Ross Geller and Rachel Green.
Speaking on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on May 4, the host brought up the topic that Kudrow has “a new thought” on the infamous fictional split, asking her if Ross and Rachel were really on a break.
“Well, no. But it’s beyond that. It’s beyond break or not. He was a bad boyfriend.”
The studio audience instantly cheered, agreeing that even Lisa Kudrow herself was surprised. The Bandslam star faced Jimmy Fallon and the crowd, and said:
“Oh, you agree! Oh, I feel better. Thank you. Thank you for this. Thank you, all of you.”
Lisa Kudrow further explained her hot take on the decades-long debate.
“We did the reunion just like five years ago… we were all so like, ‘They were on a break.’ Like, ‘Rachel, that hysterical shrew, not letting him sleep with someone and won’t get back together.'”
After a brief pause, the Romy and Michelle actress stressed:
“She shouldn’t have gotten back with him because he was horrible.”
Where did “we were on a break” originate?
For context, in Season 3 of Friends, Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) is working at Bloomingdale’s, her dream career after leaving her waitress job at Central Perk, with the help of a friend and colleague, Mark, who clearly has a crush on her.
Ross (David Schwimmer), her boyfriend for a year, gets jealous and insecure, leading him to bother Rachel at work repeatedly. During their first anniversary, Ross surprises her with a picnic at her office, but she is swamped with work and is stressed out, so she asks him to go home.
Ross’ deep jealousy follows them to Monica’s (Courteney Cox) apartment, where Rachel also lives, leading to a huge fight between them. This is where Rachel asks for a break, which is a cool-off period. However, Ross misunderstands it as a breakup and that it’s final.
To wallow in his heartbreak, Ross goes to a bar with Chandler (Matthew Perry) and Joey (Matt LeBlanc), where he meets Chloe. He hooks up with her, but realizes his mistake the morning after. Rachel soon discovers, and they fight again, with Ross justifying his action with, “We were on a break!”
The line became a staple phrase for the rest of the series, and continues to be the center of pop culture discourse even after about 30 years.

In her conversation with Jimmy Fallon, Lisa Kudrow, who plays Phoebe Buffay in the sitcom, went on to berate Ross’ actions.
“You had a crisis at work, so you weren’t available for a few nights, and he flipped out? Wow.”
When Fallon asked her if she had talked to David Schwimmer about her take, she was speechless. The host laughed it off and told the buzzing audience:
“He knows now!”
