The Odyssey seems to be one of Hollywood’s biggest upcoming releases. However, months before its theatrical debut, the Christopher Nolan epic has found itself at the center of an unexpected online debate.
This situation isn’t new as several other movies have also faced a similar kind of backlash, and the latest example is none other than Disney’s Snow White. The casting of Rachel Zegler as the Disney princess became a big reason why many criticized the film before it was released.
Now, Nolan’s ambitious adaptation of the classic Greek tale is drawing attention for an entirely different reason. Its latest trailer has sparked widespread discussion after recording an unusually high estimated dislike ratio on YouTube. This is surprising because Nolan is known for getting immediate approvals from fans.
Considering the amount of love and support Nolan has received so far through his hit movies, the latest reactions to his upcoming film are something unexpected. This might have led many to wonder whether The Odyssey could become Hollywood’s next major controversy before it even arrives in theaters.
More details below.
The Odyssey becomes Hollywood’s most disliked trailer ever

Christopher Nolan’s upcoming movie, The Odyssey is being highly highlydscussed online because of the reactions it’s generating from those who viewed the trailer. Surprisingly, the trailer is not receiving positive remarks but dislikes on YouTube.
According to figures from the Return YouTube Dislike browser extension, the trailer uploaded on Universal Pictures’ official channel has received around 51,000 likes and approximately 255,000 estimated dislikes. This is a huge imbalance that has caught the attention of movie fans across social media.
The reaction has intensified rapidly in a short span of time. Just two days earlier, estimated dislikes were reported to be around 55,000, but within roughly 48 hours, that number surged nearly fivefold.
What makes the situation particularly surprising is that Christopher Nolan’s promotional campaigns rarely generate this kind of response. So, The Odyssey seems to be generating a lot of dissatisfaction.
How Christopher Nolan’s flawless trailer record makes this reaction even more surprising
As mentioned before, Christopher Nolan is considered among the best filmmakers in Hollywood for choosing stories that are worth watching. The trailers have always gained commendation and positive responses regardless of how ambitious his films are.
Whether it was Inception, Tenet, or Oppenheimer, audiences loved how the films were promoted even for stories that were considered complex or unconventional. But now, if you look at how fans are responding to The Odyssey trailer, it becomes quite startling.
A comment by users @tedbearington under the trailer posted by Universal Picures on July 1 reads:
“For those that don’t have the dislike extension on chrome and are watching on mobile this trailer has 357K DISLIKES.”
Another user named @xxhendarsin3592 said:
“I paid nothing to see this trailer and I already want my money back.”
One user, @graftedbranchhomestead mocked the film by saying:
“Thank you Hollywood for ensuring that i spend time outside this summer and not watching tv.”
Seems like the comment section is more interesting than the trailer as one user, @theMolluskMan wrote:
“My Greek ancestors are cringing in their sepulchers.”
All these comments hint that The Odyssey could be the next big Hollywood film to gain mixed reactions, especially negative ones. While these estimations are from a third-party tool, comments all over social media platforms, including X and Instagram, also suggest that this project might end up in controversy.
