Fire Country’s Kevin Alejandro teases Shawn Hatosy’s big return in Season 4’s upcoming Episode

The next episode of the CBS firefighting drama Fire Country will feature a blistering reunion that has the potential to change the power dynamics within Station 42. Season 4, episode 12, Life of a Firefighter, Troop leader Brett Richards, played by Shawn Hatosy, returns as battalion chief. Things don’t get any easier for Manny Perez, played by Kevin Alejandro, who’s been running the station while Richards has been gone.

Kevin Alejandro, in his recent interview with TV Insider, has teased that the return of Shawn Hatosy will spark an interesting and volatile face-off between two people who both think they have the right to be the leader of the pack.

After months of Manny running Station 42 and earning confidence in the role, Richards’ very sudden return is a blow to that sense of control.

The March 13, 2026, episode tallies another challenge to Manny’s leadership in a demanding shift. There will be a surprise visit that will shake up the firefighters of Station 42 as they find themselves facing a never-ending string of emergencies, when none other than Battalion Chief Brett Richards makes an unexpected return to their world.

Kevin Alejandro talked about this dynamic in an interview with TV Insider, stressing that the dynamic between the two will be a war of personalities.

“You’ve got two alphas in the same room, so it is just a matter of understanding who’s the ultimate alpha and who has that decision in the moment. And so there’s always going to be that back and forth, which I freaking love, that I have experience on you, but I’m the current, and this is my world, but I’ve been invited into this world to take charge,”

Manny’s insecurity might become a recurring theme once Richards returns, as the two men embody two kinds of authority. One form of authority comes from seniority and experience as a battalion chief, and then there’s Manny, the man running Station 42 on a day-to-day basis. That’s a natural dynamic that brings up questions like, who actually should be in charge if there’s an incident.

The synopsis of Fire Country season 4 also suggests the episode will delve into the emotional demands of leading a high-risk team, as well as the fast-paced rescues.

“As station 42 battles through a relentless shift, the unexpected return of Battalion Chief Brett Richards throws the crew off balance and forces Manny to confront his growing self-doubt.”

However, Alejandro’s remark about Richards’ return suggests that the characters’ competition isn’t so much antagonistic as it is two powerful leaders vying for authority in a situation where it’s complicated.

At the end, both the leaders simply want to protect their firefighters in Fire Country season 4

Alejandro’s comments also hinted that the conflict in the episode would be a push-and-pull affair rather than a one-sided affair. Manny has been the station chief and so has established relationships and found his own rhythm with the crew.

However, Richards bore the burden of the office, and his previous tenure as leader lent him immediate gravitas and authority when he rejoined the ranks. The outcome is that both men feel entitled to make decisions on behalf of everyone, to the detriment of the whole team.

In the end, these characters are more like a common enemy to the identity of what they both want, which is to protect their town, and they want to protect their firefighters at any cost.

“We’ve set ourselves up for a really good back and forth between the struggle of power, struggle for power, but ultimately all the decisions are based on the good of the community.”

This line reinforces one of Fire Country’s central themes: even when personalities clash, the mission of saving lives remains the top priority.

Because of that balance between personal drama and emergency action, Shawn Hatosy’s return could become a pivotal moment in the season. The clash between Manny and Richards will likely test both characters’ leadership styles and push them to reevaluate their roles within the station.
