An extreme heat warning and a chance of storms are raising concerns ahead of France’s Round of 16
France returns to the same Philadelphia venue that delayed its match earlier in the tournament, and once again, the forecast is shaping up to be a central storyline. The Round of 16 matchup between France and Paraguay is scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m. ET Today, with an Extreme Heat Warning in effect for the city through 8 p.m. Temperatures are expected to climb above 95 degrees, while the heat index, factoring in humidity, could reach as high as 110 degrees, among the most extreme conditions of the tournament so far.
FIFA acknowledged the situation directly hours before kickoff, stating that it was closely monitoring the weather in Philadelphia and warning of a high risk of delays. The organization said it would continue assessing conditions and provide updates as needed, though reports later indicated no change to the scheduled kickoff time as of Saturday afternoon.
Storms add another layer of risk
Beyond the heat itself, forecasters are also tracking a chance of thunderstorms moving through the region later in the day. The National Weather Service extended an Extreme Heat Warning across the Philadelphia area through 8 p.m., with the heat index expected to feel hotter than 100 degrees by midday and climb even further into the afternoon. A cluster of stronger storms is expected to move through the region between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m., with the potential for damaging wind gusts between 60 and 80 mph and localized flash flooding.
Philadelphia and the surrounding region remain at an elevated risk for these storms, raising the possibility that FIFA’s weather safety protocol could be triggered depending on how conditions develop through the evening. Under that protocol, any lightning detected within roughly 13 kilometers of the stadium requires an immediate suspension of play, with players sent to locker rooms and spectators directed to shelter. Play cannot resume until at least 30 minutes have passed since the most recent lightning strike.
A familiar situation for France
This is not the first time weather has disrupted a France match at this same venue. Earlier in the tournament, France’s group stage match against Iraq was halted at halftime after severe thunderstorms activated FIFA’s safety protocol, delaying the second half by nearly an hour. That history has added extra attention to Today’s forecast, given the same stadium and a similar late day storm risk.
What’s at stake for both teams
Beyond the weather, the match carries real stakes for both sides. France enters the round of 16 unbeaten, having defeated Sweden in the round of 32 behind strong performances from Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise. Paraguay arrives with its own momentum after eliminating four time champion Germany in a penalty shootout, a result that has fueled confidence heading into tOday’s matchup. Whichever team advances will move on to face either Canada or Morocco in the quarterfinals.
Looking ahead
Beyond Today, the extreme heat is expected to ease gradually. Sunday’s forecast calls for slightly lower highs in the low 90s, though a chance of evening showers remains. A more significant cooldown is expected to arrive by Monday, with highs potentially staying below 80 degrees alongside additional rain, offering some relief after a stretch of dangerously hot conditions across the region.
