When Barbie Ferreira first appeared as Kat Hernandez in the HBO drama Euphoria, her character quickly became popular among fans. The plot around Kat’s body positivity, relationships, and self-discovery resonated with a large number of audiences and made Ferreira a popular name in the television world. But following the second season, the actress dropped out of the show, and this created a lot of speculation as to why she left the show.
Since then, Ferreira has addressed the decision more considerately. She does not call it a dramatic fallout, but she says that quitting the show was a step in the right direction in terms of growth in her career and life. This was mainly due to the fact that she desired roles that were more creatively fulfilling, as she herself stated in a recent interview with Deadline.
Ferreira left the series and will not be appearing in Euphoria Season 3 to work on films like Faces of Death and the indie romantic comedy Mile End Kicks. She mentions that the transition has enabled her to revitalize her passion to act and experiment with roles that are more aligned with her ambitions.
Why leaving Euphoria felt like the right move for Barbie Ferreira
Barbie Ferreira indicated that her departure from Euphoria was more of a personal development than a controversy. She said that she desired roles that were more fulfilling and creative for her. Later on, she no longer believed that remaining in the same environment could continue to nurture her as an actor.
Ferreira also expressed that the job started to grow restrictive. She wanted to have a variety of roles and do projects she could give her full dedication to in her performances. Quitting the show was not refusing to acknowledge the experience she had on the set, but it was more about realizing that it was time to continue to take her career forward. In a recent conversation with Deadline, Barbie Ferreira said,
“It just felt like for me, what I wanted to do is act and be able to do different roles, and if Euphoria was going to serve that for me, I would have happily done it forever, however long it would have been. But It wasn’t really letting me show my range. In fact, it was kind of diminishing as time went on, and it was like, what makes me happy is acting and growing my career.
So, it just felt like a very personal decision where I, really deep down, don’t care if what I’m doing is the biggest show of all time, as long as I’m creatively fulfilled. It’s truly all that I care about.”
Kat Hernandez’s character played a significant part in Season 1, exploring themes of self-image and online identity. However, in Season 2, she appeared significantly less, something that viewers detected. When the story changed, Ferreira began contemplating her long-term plans and claimed that the move to leave just felt the right thing to do.
A new chapter with film roles and creative freedom
Since leaving Euphoria, Barbie Ferreira has been working on other projects star in different types of roles. She acted in the horror film Faces of Death as a content moderator who finds herself in a horrifying internet mystery, enabling her to indulge in darker themes.
She also features in the indie romantic comedy Mile End Kicks as Grace Pine, a young woman in Montreal who is working out her relationships and career. Her previous TV work is far different from the light and coming-of-age tone in the film. Ferreira explains that being able to cross genres has made acting fun again and is contributing to her creating a more diverse film career.
