Every Year After foreshadowed Charlie’s fate in a potential Season 2 with one photograph clue

While new fans were reeling with Charlie Florek’s (Michael Bradway) uncertain fate in the Every Year After finale, seasoned book readers were quick to notice the game-changing photograph, which might have foreshadowed the character’s fate in a potential season two.

Prime Video’s latest romance series, based on Every Summer After by Carley Fortune, has brought the author’s small-town romance between Percy (Sadie Soverall) and Sam (Matt Cornett) alive on the small screen. While the lifelong friends were about to give their romance a second chance, Percy hit Sam with a shocking truth: that she slept with his older brother Charlie, a decade earlier, after their breakup.

As Sam and Percy stood at a crossroads in their relationship in the finale, Charlie collapsed on the ground (from a heart attack) after seeing a photo of the trio in their father’s banana boat in his boss’ office. While Charlie’s boss revealed that his wife brought the photo from a gallery, it was strange that it was a happy memory between Percy, Sam and Charlie enjoying their summer in Barry’s Bay.

What is the significance of the photo in Charlie’s life and how does it set up a potential Every Year After Season 2? Here’s everything to know.

Every Year After: Exploring the significance of the photo in Charlie’s life

Fans concerned about Charlie’s fate after the shocking cliffhanger in the Every Year After finale would be pleased to know that the older Florek brother not only survives but goes on to have his own romance in Fortune’s 2025 One Golden Summer (a companion sequel to her debut novel also set in the Barry’s Bay universe).

With Prime Video contemplating the series’ future, Fortune and the creators wanted to leave the book readers with a wholesome Easter Egg for Alice Everly, Charlie’s eventual romantic partner in Fortune’s second book.

For the uninitiated, the photo featured in the Every Year After finale was more than just a reminder of happy times for Charlie. As book readers would attest, Alice captured the trio sharing that joyful moment during a visit to the picturesque lakeside town.

One Golden Summer follows Alice as she returns to Barry’s Bay to help her grandmother heal from a hip surgery and reconnects with Charlie, the boy she briefly met and photographed.

As showrunner Amy B. Harris revealed in an interview with Deadline, the creators contemplated giving a glimpse of Alice (for a potential Every Year After Season 2) to fans but eventually settled on this game-changing photograph:

”We finally realized we had the most perfect way to bring her in without having to bring her in, which is that photograph.”

The photograph clue hints that Charlie will survive and potentially mend his relationship with his brother.

The photo might become key to Charlie’s redemption in Every Year After Season 2

While the Every Year After finale left things on an ambiguous note for Sam and Percy, the Florek brothers also had a falling out. Percy’s big reveal changed the dynamics between the brothers and Sam ended up confronting Charlie over his decision to sleep with his ex-girlfriend.

A potential sophomore season could certainly follow Charlie’s redemption arc as he sets out to mend his relationship with both Sam and Percy, while beginning his own romance with Alice. Harris believes Alice’s photo serves as a reminder of good times in Charlie’s life and could be the key to turning it for the good:

“He lost his brother, he lost that community in Barry’s Bay. There’s this sadness and a heartbrokenness to where he is, and it felt so perfect that Alice’s photo would be the thing that reminded him of the world he loved and has lost.”

If Charlie’s love story with Alice comes alive in Every Year After Season 2, the photograph will certainly play a major role in their reunion.

All eight episodes of the freshman season are streaming on Prime Video.
