Doreen C. Broadnax, a pioneering hip-hop rapper known by her stage name Sparky D, passed away on July 4, 2026. She was 61 years old.

Everything you need to know about Sparky D’s family
Born in Brooklyn, New York, to a Caucasian mother and a Black American father, Spark D was raised in the Van Dyke Houses Projects in Brownsville, Brooklyn.
During an interview with Mark Skillz, she spoke about being raised as an inter-racial child and her identity crisis. She said:
“Being an inter-racial child in the projects was rough. We had it hard. I was raised on the 14th floor in the Van Dyke Projects. Sometimes I would sit back and ask myself ‘Who am I?’ ‘What am I?’ When I had to be black, I was black, when I had to be white, I was white, when I had to be Puerto Rican, I was Puerto Rican.”
When Sparky D got married, her rival and close friend Roxanne Shante served as her emcee for her wedding. It is not known to whom she was married, but she gave birth to four children. However, she has mentioned only her two sons on social media, including Zachariah and Dominique Martin.
She often declared her love for her kids. In May 2026, the hip hop artist dedicated a post on her Facebook to her son, Zachariah. She wrote:
“My son made my day today. I’m laying in the bed and he spoke life into me. I Thank God for teaching them the word of God. I love you son with all my heart. My son Zachariah’s pours into me each and every day he tells me Mamma the storm is almost over and I just think it praises God for that. God said a lot of days would be great. My turn is coming and I’m OK love both of my sons with all my heart.”
Sparky D shared another post in 2023, sharing a picture of her other son, Domnique. She wrote:
“Everybody I’m just a proud mama that’s my son. I have another one, but this is my first time. My second one is a Peace OK thank you Lord for my sons my strength.”
She started her career in the 1980s through Roxanne Wars. After joining The Playgirls, she met producer Spyder D who reportedly helped her produce much work. They were reported to be dating at that time.
Her breakthrough came in 1985 with the hit diss track Sparky’s Turn (Roxanne You’re Through). This opened more opportunities for her, as she earned a major brand endorsement deal with Mountain Dew.
Sparky D battled personal challenges in the 1990s and 2000s which led her to shift towards gospel music. After her initial success, she faced crack cocaine addiction and domestic violence issues. Reportedly, a 1998 marriage was strained due to her addictions. She eventually got clean and found a spiritual awakening.
After overcoming her “crack” addiction, she created Treasure Ministries as she experienced renewed faith in Christ. She eventually settled in Atlanta with her children.
