If you enjoy crime series with a pinch of comedy, Big Mistakes on Netflix is the perfect pick. Created by the duo Dan Levy and Rachel Sennott, this series delves into the chaotic lives of two siblings, Nicky, a pastor (Dan Levy), and Morgan, an elementary school teacher (Taylor Ortega), and their mother, Linda (Laurie Metcalf).
Linda’s wish is that her children give something special to their dying grandmother. Morgan and Nicky decide to get something special, but this decision changes the course of their lives forever. Morgan shoplifts a necklace from a Turkish gangster’s gift shop after he refuses to sell it, she gets caught, and eventually, the siblings are blackmailed into the world of crime.
This dysfunctional family drama shows how one wrong decision can turn your life upside down in the blink of an eye. It taps into secrets, lies, manipulation, and more. As the siblings try to crawl their way out of the organized crime world, they slip deeper with every move.
However, the series has received a mixed response. For instance, a Reddit user (No-King-6332) wrote,
“It has potential but I’m hoping they tone it down a bit. Levy’s cracking me up. Metcalf, who I love, is a bit much.”
Here’s more on it.
Big Mistakes fan reaction
Dan Levy’s Big Mistakes on Netflix has received a mixed reaction from viewers. While some have been critical of the plot, cast, and the overall flow/direction of the series, others have liked it. Fans took to social media to share their reviews. Some felt there were unnecessary and clunky developments that weren’t tied up in the end. The over-the-top reactions, especially yelling, didn’t thrill some viewers. For instance, Logical Emphasis_223 commented,
“It’s…okay. I mean I’m still watching it. I love Dan Levy so much and just want him to succeed. The first few episodes had me cringing some. Mostly because the yelling was over the top and I kind of hated everyone (except Dan Levy). But it does seem to calm down and get a little better. Hoping it ends strong.”

While some appreciated the cast’s performance and the twist in the end, the show was unable to leave a lasting impression. Mysterious-Nose2073 wrote:
I found it a little uneven. Great chemistry between Daniel Levy and Taylor Ortega and some very funny dialogue. An unexpected twist at the end.”
Another Redditor (brasscup) commented,
“The writing is awful — a lot of cliched lines and stereotypical characters (similar vein to ‘I Love LA,’ so if you were hoping Schitt”s Creek forget about it). Some of the performances are strong. Lots of wasted potential.”
However, some viewers also enjoyed the absurdity of the plot and the direction. They appreciated the comedy, performances, and insane chemistry between the characters. It debuted with a whopping 95 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and currently has an average score of 6.9 stars on IMDb. It consists of eight 30-minute episodes, which makes it easy to binge-watch. Big Mistakes is yet to be renewed for a second season.
