A British broadcaster’s on air mix up became one of the more talked about moments of Today’s World Cup final, after commentator Guy Mowbray misidentified music producer Pharrell Williams as rapper A$AP Rocky instead, still getting the identification wrong either way.
The moment was captured and shared widely on social media, quickly drawing a mix of amusement and criticism. Some viewers found the mix up simply funny, noting that broadcasters covering these events typically stay silent entirely when they can’t identify a celebrity rather than guessing incorrectly on air. Others raised concerns about the nature of the mix up itself, given how visually distinct the two men are from one another.
Two very different figures in music and fashion
The confusion struck many as particularly hard to excuse given how little Williams and Rocky actually have in common beyond fame and a shared orbit in music and fashion circles. Williams, a Virginia born producer and co founder of The Neptunes, helped shape the sound of early 2000s hip hop and R&B before later becoming creative director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear division, a role he took on following the death of Virgil Abloh. Rocky, raised in Harlem, has built his own reputation as one of rap’s most recognizable style figures in his own right. The two have crossed paths professionally before, including a shared appearance during a Louis Vuitton runway show earlier this year where Pharrell debuted new music with Rocky present.
Adding an ironic twist to the mix up, A$AP Rocky was actually at the World Cup final as well, seated with his partner Rihanna elsewhere in the stadium. Rocky, whose ties to New York run deep given his Harlem upbringing, had extra reason to celebrate the city this year after the New York Knicks won their first NBA championship in 53 years, a title drought dating back to 1973 that ended with the team’s finals win over San Antonio.

A busy stretch for Pharrell in New York
Pharrell’s appearance at the final came just days after he made headlines for a guest appearance during the final night of Jay-Z’s three concert residency at Yankee Stadium, a run celebrating the 30th anniversary of Jay-Z’s debut album and the 25th anniversary of his follow up record. The residency drew an extensive list of guest performers across its three nights, including Beyonce, Rihanna, Usher and Teyana Taylor among others, with Pharrell appearing on multiple nights to perform medleys drawn from his extensive collaborative history with Jay-Z. During his closing night appearance, Pharrell made pointed remarks aimed at unnamed critics of his longtime collaborator, framing the moment as a show of support.
Part of a broader pattern of celebrity spotting mishaps
Mowbray’s mix up wasn’t the only celebrity identification stumble during the broadcast. A separate commentator on another network reportedly mistook actor Matt Damon for Brad Pitt during the same match, suggesting that identifying the dense concentration of celebrities packed into the stands proved a genuine challenge for broadcasters throughout the game. The final itself carried significance well beyond these lighter moments, marking the first ever Super Bowl style halftime show in World Cup history, featuring a lineup that included Madonna, Shakira and BTS at MetLife Stadium, which had been rebranded as New York New Jersey Stadium for the tournament and hosted what FIFA described as the largest sporting event in its history.
