Cleveland caught between heat and a hard freeze

A brief brush with summer heat gives way to severe storms, a sharp freeze and back-to-back rounds of rain before Saturday.

Spring in northeast Ohio has a way of offering something for everyone and then taking it back before the week is over. The forecast stretching from today through Saturday is a clear example of that tendency. Heat, multiple rounds of rain, severe storms and a sudden freeze are all packed into the same seven-day window. The dry stretches between the wet spells are long enough to make things feel better than most weather apps currently suggest, but the temperature swings ahead are worth paying attention to.

A warm Monday to ease into it

Today offers a comfortable start to the week. A breezy southwest wind will push afternoon highs into the upper 60s, making for a mild if partly cloudy afternoon across the region. Isolated thundershowers are possible by evening, though coverage is expected to stay limited. Anyone heading out for dinner or an evening event should carry an umbrella, but significant disruptions look unlikely.

Overnight rain will continue before tapering off in the early morning hours on Tuesday.

Tuesday turns up the heat in Cleveland

Tuesday is the warmest day of the stretch. After lingering morning showers clear before sunrise, the afternoon will open up to partly cloudy skies, warm air and climbing humidity. Highs could reach 80° for the first time since October. For a late March day in northeast Ohio, that number carries some weight.

The warmth will not hold into the night. The atmosphere will be loaded with energy by sunset, and strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop after dark. The combination of unseasonable heat, humidity and an approaching cold front creates a setup that forecasters watch closely. Gusty winds and heavy rain are the primary concerns overnight.

Wednesday’s sharp reversal

Then comes Wednesday. Anyone familiar with northeast Ohio springs will recognize what follows a warm day with heavy overnight storms. Temperatures will tumble sharply as cold air presses in behind Tuesday’s system, dropping from the 50s in the morning down to the 30s by afternoon. That is a swing of 40 to 50 degrees over roughly 24 hours. Rain will accompany the plunge, with some snow possible as temperatures continue to fall through the day.

The cold is expected to be brief. There is little room for comfort for anyone spending extended time outdoors.

Rain lingers but the week recovers

Thursday brings another round of showers with temperatures settling into the low 50s. Friday warms back toward 60°, but morning rain is expected and coverage is forecast to increase through the day.

The timing on Friday matters beyond the morning commute. The Cleveland Guardians home opener is on the schedule, and wet conditions could complicate the game. Forecasters are keeping a close eye on that system as the week develops.

Saturday brings temperatures into the mid 60s but keeps rain in the picture. Total rainfall from Monday through Friday is projected to fall between 1 and 3 inches across northeast Ohio, with the heaviest totals tied to Tuesday night and the Wednesday morning system.

The bigger picture

Wide temperature swings in late March are a routine feature of life in the Great Lakes region. The contrast between warm air pushing up from the south and cold air dropping from Canada makes dramatic reversals a regular part of the season. This March has trended warmer than average overall, which makes Wednesday’s cold snap feel more jarring than it might in a typical year. Daily high temperatures in Cleveland from March 1 through March 29 have consistently run above normal, and the pattern is not expected to settle down heading into April.
