Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and Frank Herbert’s Dune have a surprising connection that many might not know about. While The Odyssey focuses on Odysseus’ journey to Ithaca to his wife, Penelope, and son, Telemachus, there’s another character who was a main part of Greek mythology: Agamemnon. Being the king of Mycenae, he commanded the army in the Trojan War and won it.
And the king’s story doesn’t end with ancient myths, as his bloodline eventually finds its way into the world of Dune through Paul Atreides. In Frank Herbert’s Dune books, Atreides is actually a direct descendant of King Agamemnon. This means Paul also carries the bloodline of the king whose father was Atreus. And this was the same name that inspired the Atreides family name.
But how are they connected?
How is The Odyssey’s Agamemnon connected to Dune’s Paul Atreides?
Paul Atreides is not just a random name but actually a lineage canon. In the movie Dune, Paul calls himself:
“Paul Atreides, son of Leto Atreides, Duke of Arrakis.”
According to Greek mythology, Atreides means “son of Atreus,” who was the ruler of Mycenae. And he was also the father of Agamemnon and his brother, Menelaus, the reason why his family was known as the House of Atreus or Atreides. Over many generations, that bloodline was passed down through descendants, including the Old Duke, Duke Leto Atreides I, and finally Paul Atreides.
In Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, based on Homer’s Greek epics, Agamemnon is seen leading the army in the Trojan War and winning the war. Though Agamemnon made it back home after the war, he was killed by his wife, Clytemnestra. She wanted Agamemnon to pay for their daughter’s sacrifice. Viewers learn about the same after Odysseus meets him in Hades on his way back home.
The connection is explored in Children of Dune, where Paul’s daughter Ghanima confirms that the Atreides bloodline traces back to Agamemnon. Additionally, Alia, who is Paul’s sister, also connects with Agamemnon and hears her ancient ancestor’s voice in her vision.
The link between Agamemnon and Paul Atreides is later confirmed in God Emperor of Dune. Leto II reveals that the Atreides family comes from the House of Atreus. It is the same royal family bloodline that Agamemnon belonged to in Greek mythology, as shown in The Odyssey. Since Paul is the son of Leto Atreides of Arrakis, he also carries this family bloodline, making him a descendant of Agamemnon.
How are Agamemnon’s and Paul Atreides’s journeys similar?
The House of Atreus was known for sacrifice and tragedy. Agamemnon also followed this path when he sacrificed his daughter for favorable winds, which eventually led to his murder. Similarly, Paul also sacrifices his own compassion and relationships to secure victory and gain power.
In the end, both had to face the consequences because of their actions. While Agamemnon is killed by his wife after returning from the war, Paul faces betrayal, loses his sight, and gives up his throne.
While The Odyssey does feature Agamemnon, the king who led the Greek forces during the Trojan War and played a major role in their victory, the epic does not focus entirely on his journey.
Instead, the story mainly revolves around Odysseus and the battles he has to fight to come back to Ithaca and take his throne. However, the scenes with Agamemnon make him stand out from the others, with his royal armor and powerful appearance.
In The Odyssey, Agamemnon is played by Benny Safdie, and the role of Paul Atreides is played by Timothée Chalamet in Dune.
