Running Point Season 2 has a hidden nod to Macaulay Culkin, as Brenda Song has revealed, and most fans might have missed it. Speaking at the season 2 premiere ahead of its April 23 Netflix return, Song explained the subtle nod to Culkin tucked into the new season. A flashback reveals that Ally, played by Song and Isla, played by Kate Hudson were once college roommates who couldn’t stand each other, eventually bonding over crying together while watching My Girl, the 1991 tearjerker that starred Culkin. It’s a small detail that honors Culkin, but all the way a big gesture.
Speaking about the scene, the actress said,
“That was all the writers. He just signed off on it two days ago. I’m like, ‘Babe, the show’s premiering next week. Sign off on it.’”
As for a full cameo this season, Song made it clear she’s drawing a line. Joking about that, she added,
“He pitches himself every season. I love him, but I’m like, ‘Honey, this is my job. Let me live.’ We have Ray Romano. We have Octavia Spencer. And not that he’s chopped liver, but…”
The premiere brought out a stacked crowd including Kate Hudson, Ray Romano, Octavia Spencer, Justin Theroux, co-creators Mindy Kaling and Ike Barinholtz, and even real-life Lakers president Jeanie Buss.
Everything we know about Running Point Season 2
The Los Angeles Waves are back in business as Running Point season 2 is all set to drop on Netflix later this month, and based on everything we know so far, the stakes are significantly higher this time around.
The show got renewed just one week after season 1 premiered in February 2025, which shows how good the response to it was.
Season 2 picks up with Isla Gordon, played by Kate Hudson no longer the surprise underdog running the Waves but now the one with a giant target on her back. Her brother Cam, played by Justin Theroux, who spent season 1 quietly sabotaging her, is out of rehab and already maneuvering behind the scenes to reclaim his old position. Gordons never lose, except apparently when it’s Gordon vs. Gordon.
Ray Romano joins the cast as Norm, a basketball savant turned social recluse who teams up with Isla to rediscover his love for the game. Ken Marino also comes on board as Al Fleischman, the self-appointed toilet king of Orange County who just really wants better courtside seats.
Running Point season 2 drops on Netflix April 23.
