Born Again Season 2 seems to be developing a great Sopranos like sub plot and it is truly amazing

There’s a moment in episode 5 of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 where you feel your stomach drop. It’s about a man who gets into a car and you suddenly don’t know if he’s coming back. If that feeling sounds familiar, it’s the same dread that made The Sopranos one of the greatest TV drama ever made.

The subplot centres on Daniel Blake, played by Michael Gandolfini, James Gandolfini’s son, the man whoplayed Tony Soprano. Daniel is a political staffer who has wormed his way into Wilson Fisk’s mayoral inner circle through sheer devotion, but the problem is his close relationship with investigative journalist B.B. Urich, which has made him an unintentional leak inside the Fisk machine. In The Grand Design, Fisk’s enforcer Buck takes Daniel on a car ride into the woods, stopping at a supply store along the way, and the show lets the tension breatheas you think Daniel is about to be killed and the episode makes sure you aren’t certain of that until the very last moment.

It’s a direct echo of The Sopranos’ Long Term Parking, widely considered one of the greatest episodes in television history. It’s when Silvio drove Adriana into the woods and she realised, that Christopher had chosen the mob over her. The genius of that episode was never showing you the moment of betrayal directly and instead putting you inside Adriana’s hope and then crushing it. What Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is really setting up is Daniel’s version of Christopher Moltisanti’s impossible choice: the person you love, or the monster you serve. That question destroyed Christopher and it’ll be fascinating, and probably devastating, to watch what it does to Daniel.
