Big Mistakes’ Dan Levy shares his father and Schitt’s Creek star’s reaction to his latest crime comedy

Schitt’s Creek star and actor Eugene Levy has given his seal of approval to his son Dan Levy’s latest comedy series, Big Mistakes, on Netflix. The latest eight-part crime comedy series marks Levy’s first project after the breakout hit of his Emmy-winning sitcom, Schitt’s Creek, which he co-created (and starred in) with his father.

Co-created by Dan Levy and Rachel Sennott (I Love LA), Big Mistakes follows a chaotic sibling duo who get entangled in the world of organized crime. The series boasts an impressive ensemble of A-listers like Levy, Laurie Metcalf, Taylor Ortega, Jack Innanen and Abby Quinn.

In a recent interview with People Magazine at the show’s red-carpet premiere in New York City, Dan Levy revealed his father has already watched the show and is a huge fan. In a wholesome moment, the Schitt’s Creek star revealed his father flew all the way from Canada to support his son for his latest comedy series:

“He came all the way from Canada to support. They’re [Dan Levy’s parents] already quoting lines from it, and they’re very excited to watch it again. So, that’s all I could ask for.”

What is Big Mistakes about?

Schitt’s Creek fans craving for another wacky family comedy will find Dan Levy’s Big Mistakes intriguing. Netflix’s latest release follows a dysfunctional and chaotic sibling duo, Nicky and Morgan, who find themselves in a dangerous situation. After Linda, Nicky and Morgan’s mother asks them to bring a gift for their dying Nonna’s last birthday, the siblings steal a supposedly cheap necklace from a convenience store, which turns out to be a piece of expensive diamond jewelry. When Yusuf, a goon disguised as the store’s clerk, demands the necklace back, the siblings literally exhume their dead Nonna’s grave to get it back.

Like Schitt’s Creek, Dan Levy’s Big Mistakes is yet another comedy with a dysfunctional family at its heart. While Pastor Nicky is concerned by this criminal turn, school teacher Morgan keeps convincing him to pull off one last job for their survival, which will likely put Yusuf and his Russian mobster boss off their backs. However, as with most comedies, the siblings keep finding themselves in chaotic situations, which eventually leads them to the lion’s den with the Italian mafia, resulting in a brutal Miami massacre.

It is no surprise that Eugene Levy, best known for his appearance in the Canadian sketch comedy series SCTV, praised his son’s first project after Schitt’s Creek, as Big Mistakes is highly reminiscent of CBC’s 2015 Emmy-winning series.

Big Mistakes is inspired by Dan Levy’s real-life relationship with his sister

Speaking to People Magazine, Dan Levy unpacked the real-life inspiration behind Nicky and Morgan’s relationship in Big Mistakes, which came from his relationship with his sister, Sarah Levy, who played Café Tropical waitress Twyla Sands in Schitt’s Creek:

“We’re in a far better place now that we’re older and wiser. But … anyone who has a sibling, I think, will recognize themselves in the show. And it was really about authenticating the experience of that sibling dynamic and just exacerbating all of the bickering in the light of, like, intense criminal activity.”

Nicky and Morgan are not the first chaotic siblings created by Dan Levy for Big Mistakes, who previously explored this relationship with Annie Murphy’s Alexis Rose in Schitt’s Creek. Despite the occasional flaws in David and Alexis’ sibling dynamic, they remain one of television’s most endearing duos, elevated by Murphy and Levy’s impeccable performances.

Dan Levy dedicated his latest comedy to ‘yelling families’ and ‘chaotic siblings,’ as he added:

“So my hope is that anyone that comes from a yelling family, anyone that has a sibling, and anyone that’s curious about what it is to have a sibling or come from a yelling family will find a place in this show. I just love it so much.”

Big Mistakes is streaming on Netflix.
