The history channel examines how the years after the Civil War continue to shape America today.
The eight part series, produced by Higher Ground, Audible, Pushkin Industries and the History Channel, explores the turbulent years following the Civil War and what they mean for America today
A new podcast series examining one of the most consequential and frequently misunderstood chapters in American history is now available to listeners, and it comes with a notable pair of voices at its center.
Reconstruction: The Unfinished Promise, an eight part series produced by Higher Ground, Pushkin Industries, Audible and the History Channel, officially launched on June 18, landing on major podcast platforms and arriving with the weight of a project that has been years in the making. Hosted by bestselling author and journalist Malcolm Gladwell, the series features commentary from former President Barack Obama, who appears in conversations with Gladwell at both the opening and close of the podcast.
Together, the two frame a period in American history that is rarely given the sustained, serious attention it deserves.
What the series covers
Most retellings of the Civil War era end with the Confederacy’s defeat and the passage of the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery. Reconstruction: The Unfinished Promise picks up precisely where those stories tend to stop.
The series focuses on the turbulent years that followed the war’s end, when the United States faced some of the most fundamental questions in its history: Who counts as a citizen? What does freedom actually look like in practice? And what responsibilities does a democracy owe to millions of people who had been enslaved?
Drawing on letters, court documents, diaries, eyewitness accounts and historical records, the podcast introduces listeners to political leaders, educators, organizers, formerly enslaved people and reformers whose work helped reshape the country, even as many of their hard won gains were dismantled by fierce and organized resistance. The series doesn’t stop at documenting what happened it also examines why so many of those efforts ultimately fell short and how the consequences of that failure remain visible in American life today.
The voices behind the project
Gladwell leads listeners through each episode, but the series draws on a wide range of scholars and cultural voices to build its argument. Historians Eric Foner, Jelani Cobb, David Blight and Manisha Sinha contribute their expertise, joined by writers and commentators including Kellie Carter Jackson, Kidada Williams, Kai Wright, Ashley C. Ford and Wyatt Cenac. Their perspectives collectively illuminate the debates, the possibilities and the fierce political battles that defined the Reconstruction era.
Obama’s presence in the series carries particular weight. He appears at the bookends of the project, with his conversations with Gladwell serving as a broader frame for the themes explored throughout among them political power, civic participation and the ongoing, unfinished work of American democracy. He has spoken publicly about the importance of engaging honestly with this period of history, describing it as a brief but pivotal chapter whose consequences are still being felt, and expressing hope that the series helps audiences reconnect with a part of the past that is too often glossed over or ignored entirely.
