Author Meg Cabot teases progress on ‘Princess Diaries 3’ amid Anne Hathaway’s current schedule

Meg Cabot shared a brief update about the long-discussed third installment in The Princess Diaries, saying production timing still depends on Anne Hathaway’s schedule.

Speaking at the BookCon 2026 event in New York City, the author revealed that filming had not begun because Anne Hathaway remains busy with multiple commitments.

“I don’t know when they’re going to film it because Anne Hathaway, as you’ve probably seen, is making a million movies right now.”

Currently, the production process for The Princess Diaries 3 movie is ongoing within Disney studios, and there are expectations that filming will begin within the year.

The film, which began production in 2022, is a much-anticipated sequel as it comes more than two decades after the first, following the story of Queen Mia of Genovia.

Despite this, at the BookCon event on April 19, Meg Cabot showed great optimism concerning the long-awaited film adaptation.

“One of these days she’s going to go to the castle that we have actually rented and is sitting there waiting … for Toronto castle and I’ve not been invited but I cannot wait to go to the next premiere. Movie number 3, it’s going to be amazing.”

The author wrapped up her speech and thanked the readers for their support.

“I want to thank you all for being supportive of Genovia.”

Anne Hathaway returns as Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries 3

The forthcoming installment is said to have Adele Lim as the director, with the lead role, played by Anne Hathaway, returning as Mia Thermopolis.

Launched in 2001, the movie featured her along with Chris Pine (Nicholas) and Mandy Moore (Lana). Both of them have been eager to return to the franchise.

However, Julie Andrews, who portrays Mia’s grandmother and the previous Queen of Genovia, has yet to confirm her involvement in the project.

Hathaway has a total of five big movies to look out for in 2026 alone, namely Mother Mary (April 17), The Devil Wears Prada 2 (May 1), The Odyssey (July 17), Flowervale Street (August 14), and Verity (October 2).

This is aside from her big break through The Princess Diaries 3.

On the other hand, besides Meg Cabot, director Garry Marshall too made some mention of The Princess Diaries 3 film in his recent interview.

“Well, they talk about it. Disney always likes to announce things, so they tell (me), ‘Shut up, we’ll announce it.’ No, I work for Disney, I love working for them. This is the modern world, Larry.”

The director proceeded to give information about the lead characters of the movies, Hathaway and Julie Andrews.

“(Anne Hathaway) came to my office, she was quite pregnant – now she’s had the kid, but she comes in pregnant – she puts her computer on the table, pushes three buttons, it’s Julie Andrews on Skype in Long Island. And we have a meeting. This is how we work. So I hope they do it.”
