Ashlee Jenae dead at 31 as family fights for truth

The influencer’s family is pushing for answers after her sudden death in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

A trip meant to mark a joyful new chapter ended in tragedy for content creator Ashlee Jenae, whose family is now fighting for answers after her sudden death on the island of Zanzibar, Tanzania.

Jenae, whose legal name was Ashly Robinson, was 31 years old and had been traveling with her fiancé, Joe McCann, celebrating two major milestones at once: her birthday and a recent engagement. On April 3, McCann proposed during a safari. Two days later, Jenae shared what would become her final social media post, a birthday photo with a caption expressing that her life was exactly where it was meant to be. Days after that, she was gone.

A celebration that turned into a nightmare

Jenae was found unresponsive in her villa and transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her family confirmed her passing on April 12 in a public statement describing the loss as sudden and deeply disorienting. They acknowledged that an active investigation is underway and expressed their trust in Zanzibar officials, while making clear that many questions remain unanswered.

Local authorities offered a different preliminary account. Police in Zanzibar indicated that, based on the available evidence, they believe the death was a suicide and found no indication of foul play. Officials also noted that hotel staff had placed Jenae and McCann in separate rooms following a disagreement between the couple during the trip. No charges have been filed against McCann, and authorities said they do not plan to pursue any legal action against him.

Jenae’s family has not accepted that account as settled.

Family takes urgent steps to find the truth

With communication from Zanzibar officials described as limited, the family moved quickly on multiple fronts. Jenae’s father, Harry, traveled to Washington, D.C., to meet in person with the U.S. Embassy and the State Department, seeking federal assistance to open a more direct line with Tanzanian authorities. The family has also said they are considering flying to Zanzibar themselves, where Jenae’s remains are still being held pending the investigation’s outcome.

Separately, the family is consulting with attorneys to understand what legal options, if any, may be available to them in a foreign jurisdiction.

The family’s most direct contact throughout the ordeal has been with the hotel where Jenae was staying, rather than with law enforcement. That limited access has deepened their sense of urgency and reinforced their decision to seek help from the highest levels of the U.S. government.

Cardi B weighs in as public attention grows

The case gained additional momentum when rapper Cardi B posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, expressing her disbelief that Jenae’s death was a suicide. Though brief, the comment was widely circulated and amplified public attention around the investigation, drawing intense reaction from followers who had been closely tracking the family’s search for answers.

Jenae had built an Instagram following of more than 88,000 by sharing travel and lifestyle content. Those who followed her noted the tone of her final posts, which captured a woman who appeared joyful and forward-looking, as reason to question the initial official account.

No official cause of death has been established. The investigation in Zanzibar remains active, and Jenae’s family has made clear they intend to stay fully involved in every step of the process until they receive the clarity they are seeking.
