ALLY Financial powers ABFF’s 30th Anniversary – a milestone celebration of Black cinema and strategic partnership

When Jeff Friday founded the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) thirty years ago, he wasn’t just building a showcase for emerging talent. He was planting a movement, a platform that would shift the landscape of Black cinema and open doors long closed by Hollywood.

Three decades later, with Jeff and co-founder wife Nicole Friday at the helm, ABFF continues that original mission. The festival has helped open doors for talents like Halle Berry, Idris Elba, and producer Will Packer, and has supported countless others working behind the scenes. From Acapulco to Miami, ABFF has created real opportunities for actors, filmmakers, and crews across film and television. “We have all benefited from Jeff and his family’s sacrifice and vision, which have inspired other festivals,” says Munson Steed.

This year’s 30th anniversary carries even more meaning through a new partnership with Ally Financial, which is sponsoring a series of ABFF pop-up events designed to bring the festival’s energy and purpose directly into communities around the country.

A Partnership Rooted in Community

The ABFF pop-ups, powered by Ally, reflect something rare in corporate partnerships: a company that genuinely understands the culture it is supporting. Under the leadership of Erica Hughes, Senior Director of Multicultural Marketing at Ally Financial , the bank has shown consistent commitment to Black arts and creativity, not as a box to check, but as part of their values.

These events create small, personal spaces where filmmakers, influencers, media professionals, and community members can come together, share ideas, and build relationships. They are more than screenings. They spark conversations, collaborations, and new opportunities.

“When companies like Ally Financial choose to support events like ABFF, it’s more than sponsorship,” notes an industry observer. “It’s a real investment in people, creativity, and the economic impact that follows.”

Thirty Years of Real Impact

ABFF’s influence shows up in careers that started with a single connection made at the festival. Halle Berry attended in her early years. Idris Elba met people who helped shape his early American opportunities. Will Packer sharpened his producing skills and built relationships that led to major studio hits including Girls Trip and Think Like a Man.

But the impact isn’t limited to big names. It’s seen in first-time directors who found funders, cinematographers who found crews, and writers who secured their first meetings. Over time, ABFF has become a reliable support system for Black creatives across the industry.

As ABFF marks thirty years, now with Nicole Friday leading as CEO, the festival continues to grow with new platforms and technology while staying focused on its core purpose: supporting Black storytellers and expanding access where it has historically been denied.

Why This Partnership Matters

Where we bank, shop, and invest shows who we trust and what we value. Ally’s support of ABFF represents the kind of corporate responsibility that deserves recognition and community support in return.

These pop-ups are smart, intentional, and built to add value for everyone involved. They help ABFF reach more people, allow Ally to show up in meaningful ways, and give communities new spaces to learn, connect, and be inspired.

This is what partnership should look like: culture and business working together to create opportunity and impact.

The Call to Action

ABFF’s 30th anniversary, paired with Ally’s nationwide pop-up sponsorship, reminds us of the power of community, consistency, and real investment. We celebrate the Fridays’ leadership, the careers that took off because of ABFF, and the partners who understand the importance of showing up for Black arts and culture.

But celebration should come with action. When companies invest in our stories and our communities, we should recognize and support them.

From Halle Berry to Idris Elba, from Will Packer to the next generation on the rise, ABFF proves that investing in Black creativity benefits everyone. Ally’s partnership shows what it looks like when a company supports culture in a real and meaningful way.

As we honor thirty years of ABFF, we also look ahead to the next chapter of stories, films, and new voices that will define what comes next.

The pop-ups are live. The conversations are happening. The connections are growing. And Ally is helping make it possible.

That’s worth supporting. That’s worth banking on.
