But they were sunk by Raphael Onyedika’s brace after Paul Onuachu had opened the scoring.

Uganda had a feeling it wasn’t going to be their day when starting keeper Denis Onyango twisted an ankle at 0-0 trying to prevent a corner.

The heavy-set 40-year-old soldiered on and made a good save to deny ex-Southampton striker Onuachu.

But he was beaten in the 28th minute when Onuachu stuck out a leg to end a FOUR-YEAR international goal drought.

The Trabzonspor striker, relegated twice with Saints, converted a square ball from ex-Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

Onyango needed treatment once more before the break and was replaced by Salim Magoola for the second half.

However, Magoola lasted only 11 minutes.

He foolishly used a glove to deny Victor Osimhen – having rushed out of his box.

It was the most obvious straight red card of Afcon.

And so on came third-choice keeper Nafian Alionzi.

And he was beaten within just three minutes.

Club Brugge star Onyedika slotted through his legs in the 62nd minute before netting Nigeria’s third five minutes later.

That was a well-placed shot in a crowded box and ensured that the Super Eagles went through as group winners with a 100 per cent record – having rested the likes of Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi.

Rogers Mato, sent through by Allen Okello, pulled one back for Uganda in the 76th minute with a fine finish into the corner past keeper Francis Uzoho.
