A brutal, gripping start to Spring 2026’s most promising anime

Fans who had been waiting to watch Daemons of the Shadow Realm will be reassured that episode 1 is here. After Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood ended two decades ago, which changed the standards in the shonen anime genre, the same creator is making a comeback with this new story. Hiromu Arakawa’s new story has set high expectations from the fandom because of the previous precedent this creator had set.

With Daemon of the Shadow Realm being part of the Spring 2026 anime, one lingering question in the fandom is circulating: Can this show also reach peak popularity? Looking at the premiere episode, the short answer would be that this show has a strong promise. While the story does not continue from Arakawa’s iconic work, it still manages to offer an incredibly unique premise.

Fans are going to love this brutal, mysterious start that demands viewers’ attention the second it begins, from longtime fans of this creator and newcomers alike. Interestingly, the story begins in a secluded Higashi Village where Yuru and Asa are born. They are twins, and their birth occurred under mysterious circumstances connected to an ominous prophecy.

Then, sixteen years later, we are shown Yuru living a simple life as a hunter. He is still not aware of the main reason for his existence. But while he is living his life, something is unsettling about Asa’s situation. She is locked away and kept hidden from the rest of the village. To add to the suspicion, even the villagers refuse to discuss the world below.

This just means that in Daemons of the Shadow Realm, there is a large part of reality that is kept as a secret. Interestingly, the slow-burning introduction is one of the episode’s strongest aspects. This allows the pacing to build tension without it feeling forced. Moreover, it makes the viewers get comfortable with the atmosphere, or else if the creator had jumped straight into chaos, then there was a possibility there fans could not connect to the story.

While the first half was quieter, turns out that it picked up by the second half. Everything on screen was painted in violence as a gang started to go on a rampage and launch a grotesque massacre. Although this violence was important to establish the foundation of the story and not just used to create a shock value. It is at this moment that the Daemons of the Shadow Realm episode becomes from being an interesting show to having the potential to become iconic.

Daemons of the Shadow Realm introduced a familiar yet fresh shonen core

As a shonen series, Daemons of the Shadow Realm leaned towards a familiar character trope of the main character living a sheltered life with hidden powers, which gets triggered after a tragic event. Yuru in this story also manages to capture the essence of past main characters written by Arakawa. Especially on how he stands his moral ground and is extremely sincere.

Other similar elements that we have seen in some popular shows are the sibling dynamic, as shown in popular franchises like Demon Slayer. But this creator has taken a usual trope and added his unique element to it to ensure that this concept is portrayed in a different direction. Additionally, the introduction of daemons also adds another layer of intrigue, which will keep fans hooked and tuning in to see how the narrative is going to play out.

Final thoughts

The first episode of Daemons of the Shadow Realm is a confident and compelling introduction to what could become one of the standout anime of 2026. It balances mystery, action, and emotional stakes with impressive efficiency, all while hinting at a much larger narrative waiting to unfold.
