Sling TV broken during the World Cup? Try these fixes

Here is exactly what to do when your Sling TV stream stops cooperating.

There is a pattern to when Sling TV decides to act up. It is rarely during a slow Tuesday afternoon rerun. It tends to happen right at kickoff, right at tip off or right when something major is about to unfold on live television.

With all 104 FIFA World Cup matches airing on FOX and FS1 from June 11 through July 19, 2026, big kickoffs put Sling under its heaviest live traffic, which is exactly when buffering and authorization glitches tend to surface. The spinning wheel, the black screen with audio still running underneath, the cryptic error code all of them have a fix, and most are faster than people realize.

A true service outage occurs when the platform is entirely inaccessible no channels load, no menus respond and no content plays. On average, Sling TV outages last between 30 to 90 minutes, though longer downtimes have been reported during software rollouts or infrastructure failures. Most disruptions cluster during primetime hours, particularly between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. ET, when streaming demand surges.

Here are 11 fixes to work through in order, starting with the quickest.

Start with these basic checks

Find out whether Sling is down or just one channel. Switch to a different channel and then switch back. If only one channel misbehaves, the issue is that channel’s feed, not your setup. If every channel fails, try an on-demand title to see whether live TV specifically is the problem. Open another live-video app on the same device if that one struggles too, your device or network is to blame, not Sling.

Fully close and relaunch the Sling app. Simply backing out to the home screen is not enough. On Fire TV, go to Settings, then Applications, then Manage Installed Applications, find Sling TV and select Force Stop before reopening. On other devices, close it completely from the app switcher, then launch it fresh.

Restart your streaming device. Unplug the streaming device, leave it unplugged for a few seconds, then plug it back in and let it fully restart. This is one of Sling’s own recommended remedies for black screen issues, especially when audio is playing but the picture is gone.

Fix your connection

Test your internet speed against Sling’s minimums. Sling requires at least 3 Mbps for a single stream, recommends 25 Mbps for multiple devices and needs a sustained 20 Mbps per session for 4K. Run the test on the actual device you watch from, not just your phone. Error 5-423, the most common match day error, appears only after the app has buffered continuously for 45 seconds, usually from a bandwidth drop or too many devices sharing the connection.

Reboot your router and cut network congestion. Unplug your router’s power cord, wait 15 to 20 seconds, plug everything back in and give the system one to two minutes to fully reboot before relaunching Sling. While you are at it, turn off internet connected devices you are not actively using and consider connecting your streaming device with an ethernet cable for a steadier feed.

Disconnect your VPN. A VPN can make your connection appear to originate from a different location, which can block access to local channels like your regional FOX station. Switch it off entirely, relaunch the app and try the channel again.

Account and app fixes

Sign out of Sling and sign back in. A fresh sign in forces the platform to rebuild your session and reverify what your account can access. This is among Sling’s listed fixes for error 10-220, which the service describes as an error in its system identifying the content being sent to your device.

Update the app, then clear cache or reinstall. This is Sling’s fix for error 21 51, which typically follows a programming change or a DVR recording attempt. Update through your device’s app store, restart and try again. If updating does not resolve it, clear the cache or uninstall and reinstall the app entirely. Browser users should also update the browser, disable ad-blockers and try an incognito window.

Decode the error number on your screen. Each error code points to a specific problem. Error 1-100 means a lost internet connection. Error 8-12 is an authorization error, usually meaning a free preview has ended. Error 10-220 is a content identification issue on Sling’s end. Error 8-270 means Sling’s systems failed to retrieve the appropriate information from your device it typically resolves within 24 hours, and Sling recommends switching to a different device in the meantime.

World Cup and final escalation fixes

Restore missing local FOX channels for the World Cup. FOX and FS1 will be broadcasting every World Cup game, and Sling Select at $19.99 per month is the most economical plan that includes both channels, along with ABC and NBC in select markets. Local FOX stations are available through Sling in 18 markets, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and Washington, D.C. If a local channel you should have is missing, go to Settings, then Location, select Current Location and follow the prompts. Sling also offers a backup route your Sling email and password work as TV Everywhere credentials, so you can sign in to the FOX One app or at fox.com/live and watch the FOX channels included in your subscription.

Test another device, then contact Sling support. If the app works on a second device, the original device is the problem, and Sling will direct you to that device’s manufacturer. If Sling fails across every device you own, the issue likely sits on your account. Before opening a support chat, note the time the error occurred, what you were watching and which device you used it speeds up the resolution considerably.
